Webcam USB problems

I grabbed a Microsoft Lifecam VX-5000 webcam the other day, and I'm having problems. It's got a USB connection, but when I try to connect it to a USB port on the computer, I get the message, "This device has malfunctioned" and that it can't be recognized. This only happens in the four USB ports in back of the computer - the one in front seems to work a bit better, with the computer actually understanding what the webcam is. However, that one front USB port, that's where my wireless adapter is located, and it too won't connect to the back USB ports because we have to reinstall it and I got not disk.

The thing is, we've hooked a PC tablet and also a cheap digital camera to those back USB ports just fine, with no such issue. I'm running Windows XP on a computer that's about 3-4 years old.

Oh, other info: already tried reinstalling, switching ports, and all that. Doesn't seem to be a software issue.
