Can't run Steam games except hl2

Hi guys, this is really frustrating. I hope someone can help me out. I searched the web extensively before I came here, and I found that many people are having my same problem, though not necessarily with the same circumstances.

So, I can't play any steam games except hl2. HL2 loads fine, but L4D, TF2, and Portal all crash at startup, saying "hl2.exe has crashed." More specifically:

AppName: hl2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: shaderapidx9.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00029cf6

This just started happening last night. Coincidentally, two nights ago I contracted the Antivirus 360 virus, which is a virus that poses as antivirus and does horrible shit to your computer. After reading two different tutorials on how to remove this virus, I downloaded two different programs for the case (Spybot and Malwarebytes). They installed fine, but neither of them ran. After this I got really frustrated and ran Adaware and Avira scans at the same time, which both came up with one malicious item each. I thought this might fix the problem but it didn't.

So now I'm stuck. TF2 and L4D were working fine 2 days ago, and I haven't changed anything. It just, happened. Help?

If spybot and malwarebytes are known to remove that spyware try changing the name of the exe file for them and running them again. Usually spyware will prevent certain exe files from running, so if its renamed it won't raise any red flags.

Also, try to download and install directx

Just followed this tutorial but found nothing - no files present, registries completely clean.

Eternal, I renamed malwarebyte exe and it IS working now, so I'm starting a full scan.

Try this first. If that doesn't work:

Disable System Restore. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode. If you can find a scanner/removal tool specific to that virus, run that one first. Then run a full anti-virus/spyware scan, running each one by itself in sequence until all of them find nothing. If they find something, let them complete and use them to fix the problem. Then reboot again in Safe Mode, and run each scan again one at a time until all of them come up empty.

Once everything is fresh, reboot your computer in Normal mode and run each scan again, just to make sure.

It's really time-consuming and anal, but it's the only way I've found to really completely eliminate the really robust viruses. Most of them generally live in System Restore, and are only able to fully be removed in Safe Mode. Make sure you turn System Restore back on once you're done.

PS - Don't plan on using your computer during this whole thing. Just go watch TV or something and check on it every once in a while.

    Success!

Malwarebytes found a bunch of files and deleted them - all I had to do was change the name of the exe. I can now run TF2. Thanks eternal and Inquisitor.

    fuck hackers
