PS3 backwards compatibility question

I have the MGS4 40gb ps3, and I'm attempting to play chrono cross on it, but have hit a bug that is making it nigh impossible for me to progress. I've googled around and people seem to have hit the same problem (though on different models), but are sometimes able to circumvent it. My real question, though, isn't how to bypass it. I'm wondering if my ps3 model even supports ps1 emulation in the first place, or if it's sheer dumb luck that chrono cross even booted up.

Also, I'm looking for suggestions on how get my CC save off my ps3 so that i don't have to start over if i end up playing this on my ps2. Thanks!

I know there is a USB transfer kit. When I bought my 60 gig PS3 I transfered all my PS1 & PS2 save games over using it. I'm not sure if it transfers the other way, but it could. It'd be worth a shot. I'd give it a try for you, but I sold my PS2 & memory cards when I bought my PS3, since back then they had full BC.

Man this is bullshit. I've read all these stories about people trying to call up sony and report the problem and sony saying "oh it's not our fault" or "your model doesn't support backwards compatibility." I guess i'll try my hand with customer support, otherwise, i'll track down a USB pick that namrok recommended.

You might want to try to research if that USB doohickey transfers games the other way. The more I think about it, the more I'm not sure it does.

It doesn't, the USB transfer cable is a one way street, unfortunately.

BOGUS. So i can kiss my chances of shifting my save to my ps2 goodbye? I guess i'll have to keep trying my luck on the ps3, or just start over :(

I can assure you this allows transfers to the PS3 from a PS1 card, and both ways for the PS2. I've since given my PS2 away so I can't test PS3->PS1 for you, but there's no reason it shouldn't work. The virtual card on the PS3 is treated as a "real" card for every other purpose.

Yeah, after double checking, they did add two way transfer capability for PS2 cards via a firmware update last year. However, I haven't found anything on allowing 2-way with PS1 cards.

Or does it even work with PS1 cards? Considering you can't put a PS1 save on a PS2 card and vice versa.

You can put a PS1 save on a PS2 card. You can't *run* it, though.

I think I've got an older, busted PS2 here. Going to see if I can find it.

Edit: Durr. Irony is me. I do, in fact, have a launch model PS2 here (complete with shoddy laser!). What I don't have, is my PS3.

Ok so theoretically, i could copy it to the ps2 card, then on my ps2, copy the data from the ps2 card to the ps1 card, then play some fucking chrono cross?

Theoretically yes. That's the best I can do, and I'd say that's a longshot with what BlackDragon's been saying.

The worst part is I have a copy of Crono Cross, PS1 and 2 memory cards and a PS2 right here. I'm going away for a couple of months and lent out my PS3 rather than having it sit here. Really wish I could be of more help.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, the 1.80 firmware allows both PS1 and PS2 transfers ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_Firmware ) and this random google also lists it as possible ( http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9722723-1.html )

That page keeps saying the 8mb memory cards so it may not absolutely do it. It at least puts me on the right track, though. Who wants to let me borrow their cable? :D
