Building Stuff in Second Life

Ah, Second Life, home to the seedy underbelly of internet culture. It's also got lots of pretty cool stuff, like NASA's jet propulsion laboratory. They've got an island set up with all kinds of nifty exhibits, and you can watch stuff like Mars rover landings in real time there.

Our school is looking to make some kind of virtual presence there, and I'm one of the schlubs who is tasked with digitally building stuff. Thing is, I'd never used Second Life before now, much less built stuff in it. So, do any of you guys have any experience making things in Second Life? Know of any good tutorials I can read? Any tips for the aspiring builder?
