How so? They're saying that Obama fucked up and that he better hope nobody hears. That's not "wagon circling." They're just not making a huge deal about it or feigning outrage.

At the 54 second mark, Olbermann asks "what do we (quickly corrects himself), what does he do about it?" It's just a interesting self correction.

So when two media outlets cover the same thing and one's headline and lead in is:

On '60 Minutes,' Obama rebukes Cheney criticism

President Obama said in an interview aired Sunday that the hardest decision he's made since taking office was to send more troops to Afghanistan.

And the other's headline + lead in is:

    Obama ... 'Are You Punch-Drunk?'

President laughs, smiles while discussing how quickly the economy crumbled between the election and inauguration

Does that mean Fox News (the latter) is circling the conservative wagons?

You're forgetting the outrage that seven year olds and their overprotective parents can dust up. Obama will lose the crucial support of Soccer Moms everywhere.

When Burlesconi called Obama "young, handsome and tanned" it started a minor tiff, and apparently it took a fair amount of backroom diplomacy to even get Obama to take Burlseconi's "congrats on winning and all" phone call.

Obama made a dumb comment, and if he were anyone else that's all it would've been. If a popular actor makes that gag on Leno it doesn't mean anything but an indignant press release from a couple advocacy orgs.

We should hold our political leadership to a higher standard. That is why we make them our leaders.

I don't know. Most people didn't blink an eye when Bush mockingly pretended to look for 'weapons of mass destruction' at the White House party ('whoops, none over here!' cue: Republican laughter). You know, the whole reason we went to war, when he sent thousands of young men and women to die.

Because that was self-deprecating and tasteless but doesn't violate any rules. Anyone can make a "where are the WMDs" joke, and it only makes him a lovable asshole for making one himself. But you aren't supposed to make Special Olympics jokes. That'as a different thing altogether.

How is mocking the special olympics any different than mocking a war?

Actually, it seems the latter would be much worse and more tasteless, considering that, as far as I know, nobody died because of the special olympics, let alone thousands of people.

And it also seems that you're stretching shit in order to convolute this into something other than what it was. Making an insensitive politically incorrect joke about the disabled is not comparable to displaying an arguably inappropriate sense of humor during serious and troubling times.

Yeah, I agree with you, making an insensitive politically incorrect joke about the disabled is not comparable to mocking the reason a bunch of my fellow soldiers died

Because they're on two completely different ends of the tastelessness spectrum, one is not okay but everyone does it, and the other is "what the holy fuck is wrong with you no seriously go fuck off"

The only morally appropriate response to starting a war and realising it was a "mistake" would be to give all your money to the widows, victims, orphans, and survivors of the war, making a full and public statement of contrition, and devote yourself to righting, in some way, the immense damage that was done by your actions through a life of public service and charity. Wear sackcloth and ashes and do some self-flagellation to prove you really mean it.

And, yeah, I am being serious. "WHOOPS THEY AREN'T UNDER THE COUCH" doesn't cut it in my mind.

It doesn't even sound anymore that we're even trying to debate whether what he said was offensive or not.

It's just now about how offensive it really was, in what way it was, who it offended, and then how offensive other things are in comparison, and then comparing said other things to this thing to relate the level of offensiveness to find the appropriately matching analogy in offensiveness.

What he said was insensitive but not intentionally harmful or mean-spirited. Didn't he even already apologize? It was an off-hand joke in poor taste.

You sure you aren't confusing it with the Paralympic Games? Special Olympics doesn't really have competition as the main thrust of it's goal. It's much more concerned with supporting esteem and community outreach.

True, but it's also true that people are going to applaud Special Olympians just for being out there and competing despite their handicaps. The fact that the special olympics has some athletes that are quite good doesn't make this untrue. I wouldn't even call it patronizing, since it wasn't a jab at Special Olympians so much as it was to patronizing people in general.
