Direct Blog Advertising

I've been running a moderately successful blog for about a year and a half now, and I'm starting to consider ways in which I can maybe have it produce a little bit of revenue. I've had Google Adsense ads on it since its inception, playing around with their placement and number, and I've also used Amazon links, both when recommending certain books or products and also in dedicated ad spaces. Neither have amounted to squat, revenue-wise.

The blog is very locally-focused in that I write a lot about local restaurants, grocers, and other food-related businesses. While my traffic isn't spectacular (about 2500 visits/4000 pageviews per month), it is consistent, concentrated in my neighborhood, and growing. When I reviewed one nearby bar right after they opened, the owner said their walk-in traffic increased appreciably.

All of this is a long-winded way of saying that I think I can do more with the ad real estate on my page, but I'm not sure of the best ways to go about it. Is it worth trying to join a blogads.com-like fellowship which has ways of catering to local blogs? Am I better served appealing to local businesses directly? If so, how do I begin deciding on appropriate ad rates, as well as implementing a system for tracking performance?

can you feel the struggle within?

Check out the competition. Your local paper(s) will be able to tell you their rates for advertising on their websites and monthly page view stats. Use that as a reference point.
