What are the games like? I'm seeing chicken feet, dinosaurs and really generic characters. Not all of those things are bad, of course. Do you usually have to play the previous games, or could you jump right in if it turns out to be good?
It's just one of those rpg series I never really got around to.
Yeah same here, any recommendations on which of the PS2 ones to pick up for someone starting out on the series in PAL-land?
They're all mostly stand alone, so... wherever.
Mana Khemia is an absolutely fantastic game and I think one of the best RPGs on the PS2. Atelier Iris 3 is also solid, but Khemia improves on it in almost every way. Also, its sequel will supposedly be out this summer in the US. I wasn't a huge fan of AI1 or 2, but they're quaint little colorful and spritey RPGs. Totally inoffensive and certainly not bad, just a bit bland.
The Atelier games are basically alchemy simulators mixed with an RPG. Generally the RPG portion of the game is merely decent, but the alchemy part of the game (using formulas & ingredients to create new items) is a blast.
If you want to play an existing Atelier game, Mana Khemia is probably your best choice right now. Get the PS2 version though; I hear the PSP version has horrendous load times that ruin the whole thing.
It is reviewing very, very well so far. The only complaint seems to be slightly clunky inventory management as the inventory can get rather massive. No review from Famitsu yet, I guess we'll get that next week.
No word on this coming to the States yet, but NIS America would have first crack at it. I'm hopeful since it's reviewing better so far than any Atelier title has since Atelier Elie all the way back in 1998.
