One DVD drive doesn't work

I'm not exactly sure why one doesn't work. I have the standard player and a burner. I think it has something to do with using one of those programs that makes an extra, fake drive appear. I tried uninstalling that and that made the fake one disappear, but nothing else changed. It physically will go in and out and spin and whir, but it never detects a disc inside. Any help or ideas about this would be great.

I've gotten over that mostly by playing everything through the DVD burner. It still works just fine. But, I've just installed a game that forces me to have the CD in and it won't default to the burner drive. It seems to want to check the broken drive each time, finds nothing, and refuses to start. Is there some way to make it point to the burner instead?

Any other ideas for how to make either my normal drive or the game work? I figured I needed to ask either here or in the technology subforum...

Any suggestions that could be helpful? I should probably try asking at a reasonable time, heh.
I'll shut up if there's nothing after this.
