computer restart issue

UldorUldor Registered User regular
Been having an issue I was hoping any of the tech guru's on here could answer

First the system

Processor: Intel Core2Duo e7200 2.53 ghz, OCD to a 3.3
Memory: 4 DDR2 800
Mobo: Dfi Lanpart DK P35-T2RS
Sound Card: Xfi-xtreme gamer
Hard Drives: 2 Seagate 320gb in raid 0 and a Single Western Digital 1tb
Graphics Card: nvidia gtx 260
Powersupply: 700watt not sure on brand
Runnin vista business 64bit

System runs great normally, plays any games I need it to Fear2, ETW, WoW, Crysis etc

Recently got into warhammer and whenever I play it, the whole damn computer restarts itself after 20 minutes or more of play. thought maybe the card wasnt seated properly, reseated it. updated graphics drivers, same issue. Unplugged and reconnected all all power connectors for the entire system, still crashes. Uninstalled the game, all video drivers and reinstalled both and same issue. Only thing i guess it could be at this point is power supply, but why its happening with this game I can't figure out if my rig can run any of the above games pretty much full tilt with no glitches.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I bet something is overheating. Check to make sure nothing is clogged with dust and that all your fans are working properly. Use a compressed air can to clean out the dust in your GPU/CPU heatsinks.

Get a program like SpeedFan which can log your temps - leave it on and then go play your game until it crashes, then check the log to see if temps are going up and which ones.

Does it do this on all games or just WH? Like if you run Crysis does it do this?

Cleaned it out yesterday, still no change, and no it ONLY happens with warhammer, no matter the video setting either. GPU temp isnt spiking as far as I can tell from everest while im in the game, sitting anywhere between 35-40 celcius.

Go get Prime 95. Run the memory intensive torture test for a night. If it can go 8 hours or so, you can rest assured it's probably not the memory. At that point I'm inclined to blame the power supply. Can you post the brand/model? You told us it's a 700W but that's not really the number that matters...I want to know how many amps are going over its 12V lines.

Strange that it's only with one game. I second the Prime95 test. From the sounds of it (hardforum and this review,) the PSU might not be feeding the cleanest power, and that makes me wonder about it as a potential culprit given the video card you're using / the OC'ing of the e7200. Normally I wouldn't look at the PSU first in a reset problem only with one game, but it doesn't sound like the most well received of PSUs (apparently a rebranded 650.)

I'd try running your e7200 at stock speed/voltage first, which will cut your power draw considerably. If it works (you're stable after), you've pretty much guaranteed the PSU is the problem. If it doesn't work the PSU could still be an issue, depending on exactly what's happening that triggers the reset (ie if it's just the GPU drawing too much power on it's line in warhammer.)

I'm assuming automatic restart upon crashing is enabled. I'd suggest turning that off and see if you can get a bluescreen with an error code.

How to turn off automatic restart in vista:

After running the cpu stock settings the game just crashed again as usual, and I just checked the automatic restart option, and it is unchecked so its not a blue screen error i guess.

Power supply is overheating - not the GPU or the CPU

after looking up more about the power supply I think thats probably the culprit, but I still dont understand why its in a game thats far less graphically intensive and thus less of a draw on power than other games that I've never had an issue with.

prime 95 didnt cause any issues for the 9 hours i ran it, but funnily enough, been playing for the last 3 hours, and no issue so no idea, maybe the last time i reseated and unplugged/replugged everything i got whatever cable was loose /shrug
