    How did FF11 do it?

Very, very poorly. Poorly enough where it was plainly apparent when a player was using the console, and poorly enough where parties actively avoided these people because they were such a liability in groups.

Except for the whole part where people playing with a PS2 or 360 can use a USB keyboard and almost always do which basically makes their input exactly the same. Whoops.jpg

    FF11's controls were ass, period.

Somehow Square designed an engine too complicated to work comfortably with a gamepad, while simultaneously too friendly for a gamepad to work ideally on a keyboard and mouse.

    Just terrible.

I'm against a non-portable version of Pokemon myself. I totally prefer actually carting your DS around and meeting people in the physical realm.

When I bought Diamond I was riding back home from Boston on the train one night. There were 3 other people in the car with me and I was playing Pokemon on my DS.

This dude, about 19, saunters up to me and asks "Hey, uh... what are you playing?"

    I'm all 8-) "Fuckin' Pokey-mans."

Then he responded with :o "Wanna battle?"

I was all "Fuck yeah I do!"

    So awesome.

I remember organising a battle/trade meet with a casual acquaintance after school so we could trade for the red/blue exclusives. None of this high-faluting WiFi, we had a cable and we liked it, dammit.

It's weird, you really do. I think the trick to learning it was figuring out that I didn't need the mouse for anything. Once I realised that I had no problem getting through the menus.

Console controllers are utterly incapable of handling any sort of MMO UI.

EDIT: Sure you could use a USB keyboard but then if you're going to force players to use a keyboard anyway why bother developing for a console anyway?

Legally, in order for accreditation, a console game must be completely viable with that console's standard controller. That's why Guitar Hero and Rock Band can be played using the regular controllers. They had to do that, legally, so they made it achievement based, since they didn't intend for that to be the norm.

I've actually had this conversation with a guy I used to work with. He was a part-timer who's day job was working as a play tester. I can't remember the company he worked for, but he play tested one of the games that came out over the winter. One of the "______ of _______ #" games.

Damn, I'm so not a gamer.

It was alright, although some of the boss fights were total bullshit unless you had a really good weapon (Your weapon gains levels if you exchange it with a friend and then take it back and you do that a few times)
