How stupid-looking of a car would you drive if it only cost $2,000?

I remember seeing this a while ago when it was first announced, but it looks like there's finally a date when India will be able to claim their deposits on the Nano: July.

3-23-09-tata-nano-car.jpg

The base package is ~$2,000, and the top-end model with A/C and other amenities is ~$4,000.
Engadget wrote:
After getting official over a year ago, missing its original production plan and eventually hitting a wall with respect to production, Tata's long-awaited Nano vehicle is all set to take to the streets this July. According to a fresh report over at Reuters, the world's cheapest car (100,000 rupee, or $1,980) is expected to be the hottest thing around when it ships in India in a matter of months. In fact, there are so many orders waiting to be filled, initial owners will be "randomly selected from bookings made between April 9 and 25." We're also told that a European variant will be launched by 2011, and while a US model is still a possibility, no firm launch date has been given there. Good luck getting your rear into one, and be sure and shoot us a few hands-on shots if you do.

Reuters write-up

I don't know about you guys, but my commute to work is short, and I currently drive a beat up old Pontiac Grand Prix that gets not-so-great gas mileage and the A/C is broke. If I could get a brand new car for $2-4,000? Yeah, I think I'd go ahead and splurge on that. Let's say by the time they import it to the US or Europe it ends up costing $3-5,000? That's still incredibly cheap. I wouldn't care how stupid the car looked if it got me from point A to point B for that little money.

What's the cheapest car in the US now? ~$10,000?

They are a large company, so it could be the same one. They bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.

Those cars would not survive in the America that I know. Not enough acceleration or top speed to do any meaningful driving. Especially loaded down too.

The article mentions absolutely nothing about safety so I'd be skeptical. According to a few other articles it meets Indian safety guidelines but would have to be tweaked quite a bit for American and European safety standards.

there's nothing about safety because this car is made for india, for indian transportation needs. this thing would not have a chance making it over here in america.

I don't think the cheap model comes with airbags or anything of that sort, but it does exceed India's requirements for safety. Whatever those are (probably pretty low). I imagine they are trying to increase the safety aspects for the European version, and the US version whenever that comes about.

How safe is the SMART car? I think it got fairly good marks because of the ability of crumple zones and other advances in safety. I'm sure Tata can incorporate some of the same technology into the Nano.

Perhaps the old America, but what about now when people are looking at monthly bills they cannot afford? Or gas prices that are higher than when they bought the Hummer?

I know I used to want something that had good acceleration and hauling capability, but now I work every day and I would prefer to have something that got me from point A to point B as cheaply as possible. Do I need 0-60 in 3 seconds when I'm traveling a few miles to work in town traffic with a 40mph speed limit? Or hauling 1 ton of cargo when I'm only hauling my 180lb self in the driver seat? Sure, the option would be great, but does it make financial sense?

That they are cool, but that you are basically risking your life riding on one. No matter how good of a motorcyclist you are, it only takes one ditzy broad in a minivan or some douchey highschool kid driving around in the new mustang his dad bought him to ruin your day.

It's all about what chance do I have if I'm hit, expecting that even as my motoring skills reach 100 (perfect driver) I have no control over the morons in the other fast moving pieces of steel.

Except for riding in the rain, snow, other issues where I wouldn't want to be on a bike rather than in a car. But yes, I have actually thought about doing that. I may actually just buy a bike for the summer when it warms up.

    Aww, dang
The company failed to secure $100 million in venture financing for the factory in the fall, and now realizes that the $450 million it hopes to get from government loan programs favor retrofitting existing buildings rather than constructing new ones in green fields, company spokeswoman Rachel Konrad said Thursday.

What Tesla will probably do is find an existing industrial site that it can buy and retrofit, and that might not be in San Jose (San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed says he's "disappointed somebody else is going to get a chance at the manufacturing facility for the sedan."). The good news is that 'recycling' an already existing site might actually be more efficient if a proper site can be found.

But even if the plant probably won't be in San Jose, there's a chance that Tesla will move its headquarters, R&D facility, and powertrain-assembly shop to San Jose from their current site in San Carlos (that's about 525 people).

The 'Model S' is still planned for 2012, but with uncertain loans and no manufacturing plant, I wouldn't be surprised if that date changed some more.
