Links on a train: the next DS Zelda game is literally on rails
Throwing up a quick thread here, since Nintendo just announced at GDC that they're making a new Zelda game for the DS:
In which Link is on a train. No, really. He's on a train with a cannon that shoots stuff. Yes, there's still dungeons (off the train). It's supposedly being done in the Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass style.
More info to follow.
Edit: "New Zelda looks better than my description probably makes it sound. Looks like a fairly traditional Zelda portable game, with puzzle dungeons and Phantom Hourglass-style touch mechanics. The train basically works like the boat in PH, running along the overworld (presumably on a rail defined by players). Enemy control mechanics look pretty nice -- link distracted a big Zora with a controlled shadow guard, then snuck around to hit it from behind. "
And Link's in a conductor outfit:
Yes, you apparently get to do traditional Zelda stuff too.
Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"
This sounds so absurd that I will totally buy it. Honestly, the Zelda formula is getting really stale for me, and even though I haven't really finished Phantom Hourglass (keep getting distracted by other things), I like that PH and this are doing something to shake up the tired old routine.

Damn, I just posted my thoughts in the keynote thread. *snip*
I really am excited about this new zelda. I loved PH and never understood why people hated on it. The main dungeon never lasted that long, and each time you returned there were shortcuts given the new items you had. I actually LIKED that element of the game.
I really hope this one changes the focus of standard zelda. Getting a new item, beating a boss and getting access to a new dungeon is getting stale. I don't know what they would change it to, but I'm sure something could be done. Perhaps more open exploration with less focus telling you exactly where to go at what time. More free roaming elements. Perhaps you commission the people of the world to build the railways allowing you to explore different areas.

It's just a pity this game will only stop on one platform. We were expecting a Wii Zelda, and we've been left coald.
I'm so sorry
Come on, you should be all aboard with Nintendo's decision to go with the DS. I'm sure their engineers have been chugging along with development to get the most out of the system at this juncture.
Serious speculation: What are the odds Spirit Tracks will have some kind of optional DSi features? Have we figured out if it's technically possible for a vanilla DS game to do that?

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of small cosmetic DLC.

I am groaning loudly.
Can you hear me?
And yes, "Steampunk" Zelda! Yeah!

Don't worry, in a week or two they'll run out of steam.

Now, that's just bad. C'mon now Sporky.
Keeps the curly-cue look of Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, which I love.

For shame.

Edit: Oh, God, what a terrible totp.
Shut UP the Locomotive looks AWESOME. Also, there will probably be different ones.

I want it.
In all fairness to this very bizarre idea, it looks rather appropriate for the setting. I was expecting a more polished kind of train.

That's right, I am a psychic mastermind. I am now accepting calls to my hotline for just 20 dollars a minute.
