Planetside.

The game that defies all economics, the game that puts hair on your chest, the game that scoffs at the Battlefield franchise, the game that creates some of the most interesting stories in game history.

Planetside features some of the largest battles that have been seen in online gaming. Massive two or three way fights involving hundreds of troops (all PCs) on both sides. Planetside is a 3-way fight between competing factions, with players comprising the soldiers in the three military outfits.

Stolen from wikipedia.

The Terran Republic
The Terran Republic (TR), a conservative, authoritarian, collectivist nation who strive to regain contact with the homeworld and reunite the warring factions. Their leadership is a public oligarchy known as the Overwatch, composed of various representative officials and their associated Ministries, who regulate allotted portions of society in accordance with their own expertise and the collective will towards favourable outcomes. They believe that authority is the bastion that protects humanity and that in a truly free society, with no Big Brother to guide and watch over citizens, misery and suffering would quickly be visited to all. Furthermore, they regard the Vanu technology as dangerous and disruptive, a chaotic force threatening the stability of their righteous order, and only begrudgingly do they utilise it in warfare. Their vision of the future is one of peace restored through their benevolent rule, and humanity reunited by the reopening of the wormhole. They stand by the view that the Vanu went extinct by meddling with power on the orders of magnitude which was to be found in their artifacts and technologies, and they fear groups such as the Sovereignty will drive humanity to a similar fate, causing as much damage to reality as possible along the way. Their ordinance is characterised by its high rate of fire and correspondingly great ammunition consumption.

The New Conglomerate
The New Conglomerate (NC), a separatist faction determined to remain free of the controlling and domineering Republic, as well as to liberate the rest of humanity from the Republic, whether or not they share the Conglomerate's theories. Unlike the authoritarian and technocratic TR and VS governments, the NC are fighting for democracy, freedom, and human rights. As a rebel group, their leadership lies with the Revolutionary Command, a visible co-operative of military experts and leaders who direct the liberation efforts as a whole. They feel that any form of control is oppression and that a miserable free man is better off than a contented slave. Consequently, they view the Vanu technology as a potential tool of control, and the Vanu Sovereignty as technocratic tyrants, would-be dictators like the Republic, only under the banner of science and probably much worse. Their view of the future is one of freedom and self-government, where every man elects his own path and flourishes in what ways he sees fit. They rely on ponderous vehicles and slow-firing heavy weaponry, foregoing mobility and tactical flexibility for heavy armour and superior firepower. The NC's democratic philosophy is often their achilles heel militarily, as they lack the iron-fisted leadership structure of the TR and VS. From the New Conglomerate's point of view, however, theirs is the only moral and just cause.

The Vanu Sovereignty
The Terran Republic (TR), a conservative, authoritarian, collectivist nation who strive to regain contact with the homeworld and reunite the warring factions. Their leadership is a public oligarchy known as the Overwatch, composed of various representative officials and their associated Ministries, who regulate allotted portions of society in accordance with their own expertise and the collective will towards favourable outcomes. They believe that authority is the bastion that protects humanity and that in a truly free society, with no Big Brother to guide and watch over citizens, misery and suffering would quickly be visited to all. This game, despite being supported by SOE, is still alive and kicking. A patch hit last week, and the servers are full again, sometimes with a que. Not bad for a 6 year old game. Recount old stories! Talk about how much this game rocks! Talk about how much this game sucks! Maybe even resubscribe!

I remember being a Galaxy pilot (mega-troop transport) working as mobile reserves. Dropping manz wherever they were needed. Assisting in beachhead operations that involve the element of surprise and being shot at with copious amounts of flak and AA. Once we were called to drop on a fort and disrupt the TR and VS from capturing a fort that would speed up the VS from taking one of our forts. Turns out we were given the wrong target, and accidentally hit a TR staging point. Giving the footies air support, my squad managed to hold off a whole retreating force, and then from the advancing VS. We literally fought to the last man. So epic.

Finally. Took long enough, jeez. :(

But really I do absolutely adore this game. I hope that there are enough PA vets around to scrounge up a crew.. that would be too awesome.

$14.99 a month, same as all MMOs.

NC Sanctuary tune is still to die for as well.

Somebody needs to just take the basic framework of this game, pretty it up, and add updated HUD and interface ideas from MMOs and shooters of the last few years and release it, already. It'd be bought'd on day one, here.

Some of my favorite memories in all gaming were hot drops from a galaxy, just as you described. I was a MAX man, myself, and as such would be first through the door in my scatterMAX. My outfit specialized in precision drops right on top of heavily defended towers - our fighter pilots would clear out any defenders on top, then we'd fly over in the Galaxy. We had the timing down pat - mid altitude drops, and we rarely missed sticking the landing on the top of the roof. Someone would hack the door, and in I would go with the rest of our infantry right behind, using my scatter gun and the rest of the crew with N00bhammers to clear out the entrenched defenders from behind. Then, after capping the tower, we'd convert to defensive gear in the spawn room and hold that bastard to the last man if the enemy tried to retake it. Good times had by all.

So many awesome stories from this game. I realized something while playing the game, a badass Galaxy landing/drop can set the tone for the rest of the operation; much like a thrilling speech.

I would love to see a new Planetside (or spiritual successor).

I played a TR Sniper when the game came out.

I remember on base defense where me and my squad of about 6 other snipers were holding a base we took in NC territory against a ton of infantry and armor. We managed to hold the cp and spawn room for about 45 minutes when we finally got some reinforcements and took the base over.

Some epic fun with the game when it came out.

I was surprised with the popularity when I got back in to this a while ago. There are typically enough members on at once for each faction to be fighting on two continents and a cave.

Both NA servers were merged, which was probably a very smart move on their part.

I loved this game. Still do love it, I would probably come back if we get some momentum here.

Nothing beat gathering your outfit's resources and moving out. Two galaxies and a wing of reavers and 'skitos, moving through the gate. Arrive and deploy, drop a lightning tank out the back (mine, usually), and roll out on the base.

What was amazing though is that the battles were, and probably still are, so big that even such a strike force is a drop in the bucket. In those kind of battles, commanding leadership and masterful squad tactics would turn the day.

We were pretty chump though! Rarely made a dent in the big battles...

Did anyone play on emerald back then? Man, I remember Trigganator. One of the first guys to hit CR5, power hungry and kind of a douche. Still, he'd organize these massive raids. He'd get together two hundredish players, each with their tank, buggy, or squad based vehicle and just swarm a location. Such unrefined zerging wasn't our scene, but damn if it wasn't an awe inspiring sight. Lines of vanguard heavy tanks, galaxies filling the skys.

How much is that subscription? mmmmmmm....

Ahh Planetside. The game that I loved, but slowly drifted away from.

Before the rending when core combat came out, it was me leading 2 other squads on Oshur. I was cloaked in a base waiting for us to lock down the latice and watching everything from the map and reports in the commander channel. Every now and then a guy would wander into the CC of my base and try to hack the console only to be stabbed to death by yours truely. After his seventh lemening he did have a bright idea. spam the room with buckshot from the jackhammer. Even managed to hit me but I refused to move. He thought he was in the clear went hacked the console and ate the boomer I hid from sight on the wall. Before he could wander back the lattice locked and I took my misquito to the next base in victory :D

    Good times.

*edit* I also managed to get a beamer kill on all vehicles except for the Vanguard and Galaxy mwuahahaah!

Planetside was amazing in it's prime. Literally hundreds of players clashing together in all out warfare...every battle was magnificent, every hotdrop exhilarating, every skirmish a tale to be retold to your squadmates waiting for the HART. If you found the right subcommunity to play with, it was one of the best experiences you could ever have.

Unfortunately it's been too long for me to say what state the game is in now. SOE really needs to have another free 'Fodderside' event and give everyone the chance to experience the game again.

EDIT: And I agree with the topic title, the audio - especially the music - in this game is fantastic.

Oh man. I'd play this again, I really would, but I don't know if I'm ready to have that sort of relationship with a game again... its too soon.

I was fucking addicted to this game, before SOE drove it into the ground. Ironically it wasn't any of their shitty changes that made me leave. I liked the battle islands. The "bending" was cool, even if the net result was "now the islands are all planets but they still look the same". I guess it was the BFRs that did it. They'd just released a bunch of really positive patches and made it so that for the first time in the history of the game, no single faction was obviously better than the others. For a few weeks, we had balance.

    Then the BFRs came along.

We had little to no information regarding the BFRs leading up to their release; we'd assumed they'd be powerful. We'd assumed they'd have some pretty tough requirements to get one. Many of us also assumed they'd need a large crew. Nope. One-man deathmobile, whoo! Suddenly a one-man vehicle could take out multiple tanks (which needed at least 2 crew) solo. Infantry were like wet tissue paper. And some of them could fly. *edit* The BFRs, not the infantry. How cool would that be though?

They've been toned down now, given a crew requirement of two, and I believe the flying varients have been made a lot weaker. When I left the game, they were just above a tank in terms of firepower, appropriate enough for a 6 cert vehicle with a 30 minute timer. But it was too late. The players had already been driven off, along with enough of my outfit mates that the group just fell apart. Our Outfit leader went a little nuts and yelled at people on global chat (probably unrelated but still funny / sad). Population dropped, and the game was less fun as a result, so the population dropped more. I'm sure its quite possible that the merged Emerald / Markov is still alive, but i'm pretty sure Werner (European server) died a death long ago.

TLDR: I'll play this MMO again if it truly is still an MMO. If I could get a bigger game by reinstalling battlefield then no sir, I don't like it.

*edit* I can also confirm the background music has indeed been stuck in my head since 2003.

Planetside still remains nothing like Battlefield. Just last night I got to experience a whole new mission that I'd never had the joy of before. It was a Phantasm spec ops drop, and it landed us completely cloaked in an enemy base. The squad's master hacker had us in the mainframe in no time, we uploaded a virus to shield us from enemy radar, and then completely took down the base with just the 5 or 6 of us. It was quite the rush.

I didn't play for very long -- in fact, I think it was only two months -- but the biggest problem I had in this game was the (seemingly?) low skill ceiling for individual players. Just felt like there wasn't much you could do to play better, what with generally low maneuverability against high weapon accuracy. All of the interesting game was at the squad level and higher, and since I don't make friends/join groups too easily, I ended up getting pretty bored.

It was fun for a little while, though, and certainly has the massive army clashing flavor down.

This was probably their biggest criticism.. and while they obviously had the intent of making a team based game, they certainly ignored the little guy.

Thankfully, they've implemented some more incentive to going solo. This includes the new engineering things like deploying the turrets, the seat turret, mines, boomers, motion alarms, etc. and also the new hacking weapon the T-REK. This thing is pretty damn useful now, giving the ability to EMP bolt enemy vehicles to disable them for a short period, as well as upload viruses into fortress mainframes that can accomplish a multitude of tasks. The best part is it's an accessory.. so very easily used with the infiltration suit.

Also TR MAX armor.. I think it's one of the worst armors but damn do those anchors instill a feeling of invincibility.

Man, used to love this game. I played TR on Werner. I was an infiltrator, and my outfit would do a special ops night once a week, we'd sneak into a tech plant somewhere away from the main fight, and cut off their higher techs by disabling the base. Then we would hold it for as long as possible.

I remember one time we held off a big counter attack with just a bunch of boomers and a MAX.

I wish I still had the screenshots of players gathering up for big assaults. It's a fucking sight to see all that armor and all those transports.

Cave battles were pretty fun too. It was easier to rack up kills in caves, even if you were solo.

I had a NC infiltrator for awhile, did a lot of cleaning up bases. There are always a few non-max players running around those big bases that make for easy kills.

Then I switched to TR and played around with the sniper rifles a lot. I loved being a sniper in Planetside because you actually had to pick good targets, have an escape plan, etc.

Yeah, this was a really cool game in it's prime, and a nice change of pace from other MMOs. It's unfortunate that SOE's mismanagement has left the playerbase where pretty much the only people left playing are the sorts of people you don't really want to play with anyway: super tight-knit clans that ordinary people stand no chance winning against, and overly obsessive players who bitch about everything.

One thing I'm really sad about is the amount of hatred BFRs got. Yeah there were horrible balance issues when they were first unveiled, which is what soured everyone on them, but come on. An MMO with GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS!

Still, I had fun when I played it. I've told this story in previous Planetside threads, but my main thing was as a cloaked hacker / demolitions guy, either hacking bases or planting mines. Well one day I was riding my invisible bike and taking the back route to an enemy base (while the main forces were fighting out front), when all of a sudden my bike crashed into something and stopped in the middle of the road. I got off, looked around, didn't see anything, and flipped on my infrared vision. There in front of me I saw another invisible bike with an enemy dude sitting on it. I had run head first into another cloaked guy driving to our base. But I had quicker reactions than he did, because I pulled out my pistol and took him out before he could get off. I then took his bike and continued on my way.

What they really need to do is make a Planetside 2, preferably without SOE to screw things up.
