Hello! First time that I've ever had to make a 'Help me find music' thread...but I'm kind of running dry and looking to enhance my musical-knowledge-thing and make my Zune happy.
My favorite band is Cake. Anything Cake-like would be awesome.
Recently, I've been listening to a ton of British-ish music, mostly rock-stuff: Arctic Monkeys, The Wombats, and the Last Shadow Puppets. I probably like them in that order. Cool British, Australian or New Zealand alternative-rock music would be amazing.
The only musical tastes that my brothers and I seem to really share is a fondness for almost all things Aesop Rock. I would love to love them more or find stuff similar to them.
I find myself liking a lot of ska music. Reel Big Fish and I just got some Westbound Train which I'm really enjoying.
Guilty pleasures would probably be Jason Mraz and Panic! At The Disco. Don't judge me.
Required listening for ska:
Less Than Jake (my personal favorite)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Mustard Plug
Streetlight Manifesto
Save Ferris
The Toasters
Five Iron Frenzy
I want to say Suburban Legends because I love them but most people I know do not. Their older stuff is standard ska punk, and newer stuff has added a lot of dance/disco influence. They play with Reel Big Fish on a regular basis. RBF would be on the above list if you didn't already mention them, and someone already mentioned the Aquabats.
When you get through these, either look for lesser known bands (I know of plenty) or see what you think of two-tone.
You can also look up music by typing in a band name and then last.fm will play music similar to it. The algorithms can be iffy, but usually it leads to some neat stuff.

While we're suggesting websites, pandora radio is a brilliant way to find music. Hopefully you're in one of the areas that can access it.
Pandora is pretty good. I have the horrible habit of not liking songs very quickly, so I do a lot of skipping...and when I can't skip anymore....well, I'm stuck with songs that I may or may not like.
I'm not having much luck with getting Zenses to work with my Zune. I found Zuse (same thing, but specifically for Zune) but it keeps crashing too - even after updating last.fm and all that.

when you've run out of skips, you can always create a new playlist with a new, full set of skips.
Oh yeah, I'm a fan of the mountain goats. Not my favorite band by any means, but there are definitely a handful of their songs on my Zune.
Does anyone know if there's an album or website with the songs that they use in commercials around? There are tons of times while I'm watching TV and some ad comes up and all I can think about its 'Hey, that's a pretty catchy song.'
Also...is there a similar thing for the stuff that comes up on the Adult Swim pictures and or 'black screen with white words' thing? The music that plays up there is always really mellow and cool...would definitely like some of that for studying music.
In the ska vein, it looks like no one's suggested Catch 22 yet (except in the form of streetlight manifesto, as they have most of the same people), so I thought I'd at least mention them. They're great.
Bands like Cake? This one's more difficult, Cake is a particularly distinctive band.
What pops into my head as sort of similar are:
Beulah
Beck
The Beta Band
Guster
Mike Doughty
Minus The Bear
A lot of these are pretty significantly different, but I definitely enjoy them all.

My bad, totally blanked on them. Main rule with Catch 22: The first two albums are essentially a different band. Keasbey Nights is essentially the first Streetlight Manifesto album (they even rerecorded it), and the second album is them trying to stay true to the first one. In their present form, they are an excellent band, but they are nothing like their early stuff or like Streetlight.
It's funny to see them try and play those older songs live, though. I don't know why they do.

I quite like the latest of Franz Ferdinand, but I still think their first album (self-titled) was the neatest.

All their music is as catchy as this.
Arcade Fire
Editors
Foals
Franz Ferdinand
Interpol
Kaiser Chiefs
Kasabian
Maximo Park
Tally Hall (Whenever I think of Cake, I think of these guys as well, though they don't sound similar. They just cover a variety of genre)
Sondre Lerche (Specifically his latest CD, Phantom Punch, which is much more rockish than his earlier stuff)
The Futureheads
The Killers
The Late Greats (Check out the song He's Not It)
The Pigeon Detectives
Tokyo Police Club
We Are Scientists
White Lies (They're (really) doom and gloom but I like how they sound :P)
White Rabbits
Young Knives
Bolded either for extra Britishness, and/or just extra goodness.
You'd probably like the flobots (they pretty much are cake) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMEhescEBaE
Menomena: hip hop drums over compicated pop music (but that doesn't really begin to describe how awesome they are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhlv1dKDo7k&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jvMdFql18U&feature=related
Kings of Leon: More straight up rock, but they've kind of embraced brit rock a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF0Lq3P6peU
The Black Keys: guttural swagger blues rock- the best of its kind imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luwp5iZD8wQ&feature=related
