Pokemon. Is it Right for My Relationship? (SOLVED! THANK YOU EVERYONE!)

So my girlfriend and I have been kicking around the idea of "getting into Pokemon" recently as we often strive to find two-player RPGs for our console systems but come up short (I have no idea how we were able to get all the way through LOTR: 3rd Age.) We often play a little DS before bed or on lazy weekends, but we're never really "doing it together" as much as playing different puzzle/adventure games in tandem.

So, with that said Diamond and Pearl looks not too expensive to pick up, but I'd rather make sure I know what I'm doing before shelling out cash for two DS games.

Neither of us has ever played anything "Pokemon" before, but from what I understand and have read I'm considering it as a great option. We're talking about a single player "grind" RPG in which we would be able to trade and fight, keeping a nice inter-connectivity between the two separate games while spicing things up with some competition as well as assistance. My dream is that this game would facilitate us getting involved in a game world in which we would be able to interact on a limited but substantial basis.

I understand that the majority of the game is single player and grinding for Pokemans. I hope that we'd be able to get into the game and that there would be enough depth to keep us interested and to keep us looking to improve and compete. Do I have the right idea, or does anyone have any better idea? Any of you played Pokemon with your other half, and how did it go?

The way my girlfriend play Pokémon "together" is just playing our single carts and we happen to be in the same room. We have traded & made Poffin together (a little snack for your Pokés that can make them do better in contests), but we've never battled.
If we want to play games together we either play something on the Wii, Fable 2, or StarCraft.

As a forewarning: Its really effin' addicting. And you two won't technically be able to play together at first. You have to get to the 2nd or 3rd town before being able to trade and/or battle. At the latest count I think there are 492 (incorporating platinum) so if you don't plan on encountering them all be prepared to walk away from it.

Other then the stuff I just mentioned, I found it to be very fun and I even enjoyed the story.

Sounds like I'm pretty on target, here. Single Player RPG that's addictive and has a (limited) interactivity between players. We're fine with the idea of each playing our own game (which is what we're doing anyway) with an added bonus of being able to effect each others games (trading) while allowing for some trash-talking head to head (versus.)

    Sweet.

Goes beyond that. You can trash talk in real time because the DS mics transmit voice.

Also, Platinum has extra things to do with multiple people.
I would check out serebii.net to see exactly everything that Plat has instead of D&P

So starting out, would it be better to get copies of Diamond and Perl, or two copies of Platinum? Something else?

    I'll check out serebii.net in a bit.

    It will consume you.

Also, I would just get two copies of platinum.

Though historically the construction of pokemon games is such that getting two different versions is best. In order to "catch em all" for instance, you have to own or have access to people who own something like seven different versions of the game.

I suggest diamond and pearl, but I haven't played platinum yet. I wouldn't buy 2 copies of the same game though.

Man just about all the versions of the games :x

You need Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire, diamond, pearl and platinum (probably more then that, but I think I got them all).

Platinum does have some more options, especially with online play and after elite four content. Maybe one of you get Pearl/Diamond and the other get Platinum that way you don't each play the exact same version at the same time. If you decide you two like the series and want more before the next gen of Pokemon games come around you always have the option of picking up the last set of GBA games to play through and collect from so you can transfer over to D/P/Platinum. The Ruby/Saphire/Emerald gen to this day is still one my favorites.

you are playing with fire sir. you don't mix a woman's natural instinct to care and raise things with a video game centered around doing that for hundreds of monsters. Each Poke will become like a little baby and she will spiral into a poke' madness never to return. Ok my wife became instantly obsessed with the game, YMMV.

All I know if when you mix the caring for, raising aspects with a game that is so incredibly cute it is like the perfect storm when handed to a woman.

    Consumption would be fine!

So, if I understand correctly I think I'll start with Diamond/Pearl and if we're hooked pick up Platinum. I have no interest in playing with anyone other than the girlfriend, so online play isn't a big hook. Two versions of the same game is a big draw, as I'd feel like a chump buying two copies of Mariokart just for the full multiplayer experience. This is just enough different.

Diamond and Pearl are the same story with different Pokemans, right?

She plays a lot of Sims, Point 'n Click Adventure, some RPGs. Tabletop minis and roleplaying exist in our house beyond belief (we have every Warmachine/Hordes army between the two of us 50/50.) I'm hoping that the "handheld" aspects of this will make it a more ongoing endeavor. Really, I've been seeing this as the perfect "play before bed" game a few times a week that is deep and expansive enough to last a long, long time.

Most of them are the same, only a few are different.

If you going to pick these up make sure diamond is the copy you get. The pokemon are slightly more manly looking.

Don't think of this as just a troll trying to lower the tone of this thread, but Pokemon games can be so damn infuriating it'll be the cause of quite a lot of angry sex.

    Just sayin'

So Pokemon leads to sexy times? Why didn't you tell me this first?

This is pretty much solved. I'm going to get Diamond and Pearl. I'm going to play Diamond. Thank you to everyone!
