[Wii] Rabbids go (finally) home, Michael Ancel working on the game

elkataselkatas Registered User regular
edited April 2010 in Games and Technology
Well, here is another tidbit from Nintendo Power. Rabbids have finally decided to go home, but unfortunately they don't know where their home is. So, they have decided to go to the moon. The player controls two rabbids, one sitting in the trolley and one pushing trolley around. Rabbids must work together to collect pieces for the rocket, and the game is supposedly action-adventure, not mini-game fest. Ironically, series turned into action-adventure immediately after Rayman was removed from the equation.

Supposedly this is Michael Ancel's game, unlike previous Rabbid titles. Ancel said in recent interview made for french all-gamers site that he was working on game that focuses on quality parts of Rabbids IP, and game would be "really deep" instead of "commercial".

I stopped buying the mini game collection Rabbid games after the first one, but I still absolutely love the characters.

Now that they put them in a starring role in an action/platformer, I will be on this like a fat kid in a land made of chocolate.

I struck off this franchise for committing the cardinal sin of being yet more crappy minigames.

But the idea of Rabbids not knowing where home is, and deciding to go home to the moon?
Rampaging through the world atop a shopping trolley filled with traffic cones?

I've got to admit, the premise of this is wonderful.

It would be great if they went absurdly epic on it - have the bombast E.T. and Twighlight Princess rolled into one, atop a shopping cart.

The game is handled by Ubisoft Montpellier (Beyond Good and Evil, King Kong, first Raving Rabbids), and has been under development for three years. Sounds pretty promising, and artstyle is pretty good, even if little Katamarish.

Heh. IGN has a great interview with one of the developers:
We asked ourselves: "Who are the Rabbids? What is their archetype? What values do they represent?" The Rabbids have no memory, so they're spontaneous; they're stupid yet enthusiastic; irresponsible yet joyful, overbearing yet without taboo…. They incarnate a good number of our irrational impulses--that's the key. The Rabbids are irrational, emotional, sensual. They represent emotions pushed to the extreme. We created the Humans as their exact opposites. The humans in Rabbids Go Home mull over all their decisions, their emotions in-check. Their organs have atrophied. They have nearly forgotten that they have a body or a heart, and can barely handle those.

The meeting between these two opposing characters is an allegory of the internal debates we have with ourselves each time we make a decision.

When these two archetypes meet, sparks fly… and make for a variety of comedic situations wherein the Rabbids unleash their utter Rabbidness.

Come to think of it, I can assure you that the Rabbids couldn't care less that they are actors in an allegory. In fact, they would never have responded so rationally!

Ok, here's the deal. Now I'll give you the Rabbids' version and you choose:

    BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH !!!!!!!!!!

So it looks like they've completely abandoned the rayman universe? Because that looks like earth, not the surreal, completely bizarre worlds of Rayman.

One of these is not like the others. One of these just... doesn't belong...

EDIT: And, oh, don't misunderstand me. This is an INSTANT BUY for me. I completely support moving away from minigames towards an adventure game. The trailer also has some nice music near the end... sounds grand for a lack of a better word.

EDIT DOS: I just placed the music! It totally reminds me of the music from Edward Scissor Hands, one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time.

I think Rayman is pretty much dead in the water as a franchise. The platformer as a genre just kind of went into a recession. They'll probably bring him back when platformers are popular again.

Well, he says there will be more Rayman adventures, and he and the Rabbids are BEF (Best Enemies Forever)... it just seems that the two are taking a break from one-another.

Besides, I thought the Rabbids came to Earth in 2, and stuck around; did they go back at the end or in TV Party?

    That doesn't really mean anything.

Back in the days of Banjo, DK64, Mario Sunshine, Vex, and so on, platformers were it.

Now it's the first person shooter. You're going to get a FPS a lot more easily funded and approved before a platformer these days.
