So how do you guys feel about the 2.70 update? I know some of us here with inevitably be bitching about "omgz no voice chatz" but honestly, I prefer text chat to be the one to come out first.
Why?
Well, if you've ever had an AIM get-together with some of your online gaming friends (I hate Yahoo, and MSN is a little more of a bitch to get a chatroom started someone would have to have the other person on their contacts to invite, despite being way better than AIM otherwise) you might have seen some interesting things happen or be talked about.
I mean, the messaging system in the in-game XMB is fucking slow. It's about as fast as a 300 pound man running a marathon, wheezing and puffing to get by, compared to..say..a cheetah (if you have a keyboard handy.)
I mean, you could start chatrooms concerning a game that all of you are playing (more notably an offline game, so you could be playing Prototype, pounding people into the ground and stabbing them, or playing Tales of Vesperia on PS3 and pausing the game to reply real quick, instead of playing Killzone 2 online and then having to type "ohshitzbrbsniper."
I don't know. I didn't expect for Sony to add this feature in, but i'm glad they did.

2.70 added 16 in-game player chatrooms, you can now send files up to 3MB to friends, and you can copy and paste text in the web browser.

EXCERPT:
Me: "Could you guys send me a box so I can put my PS3 in it along with x amount of dollars to cover the cost for you to fix it?"
Guy: "Okay, first I'll need to go over some steps with you to confirm that your PS3 is broken."
Me: "I've had it for over a year and I can assure you that it's shit is definitely wrecked."
Guy: "So first I want you to unplug your TV and the PS3, then plug them back in."
Me: "Uuughh.... okay. Yes, I did that."
Guy: "Does it work now?"
Me: "Yes, but that's not the problem. My PS3 randomly shuts down during gameplay or dvd use. There is no way to know when it's going to do this, and it is not an overheating problem I am positive.
Guy: "So I'm going to write down that you confirmed that it is now working."
Me: "Rrraaaaarrrghhhblah!"
Guy: "Okay, so if the problem persists give us a call back and we will definitely ship you a box. Have a good day!"
Me: *gunshots*
We can just discuss the update then or whatever.
I would hazzard that most people don't have a keyboard for their PS3. Most of the messages I get on PSN are simple, title content only messages. Typing out messages takes forever with the controller. I've gotten better with it, but it's still slow.
Chat rooms? With controllers? Really? Yeaah...sounds fun. :P
A system where a group of people who want to play together could stay together, though, would be nice to have.

Too lazy to unplug the keyboard you're using right now and hook it up to the ps3?
1ST - Not at home.
2nd - PS/2 keyboard at home. No adapter.
3rd - Yes.
Yes. This is the bluetooth keyboard I use with my PS3. It has trouble remembering it sometimes, but I think that's because the keyboard is paired with a Mac in the house, too, so the keyboard gets confused.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

Also, can someone post the release notes/patch features at length? Or a link to them?
This is kind of where I'm at. The last thing I want in the middle of my game is someone interrupting me with a popup or something. That's what AIM on a nearby computer is for I gotta say having my bluetooth keyboard WAS helpful for LBP coordination.

Wait is THAT what this update did? Cause yea I'd be excited about that, a dedicated chat service or something similar. That'd be much cooler than Home.

If they could get some form of communication between people playing different games then I would be so much more excited about playing games on my PS3. But right now, I have this huge list of friends, and I don't feel connected to any of them. On Live, I feel like there's a bunch of people on there who I know. It's actually a list of friends, instead of a list of users.

Also, I heard Warhawk was the best MP on PS3 currently, but no active post in the forums. What gives? Was I wrong in what I hear?
Fan of FPS's? Killzone 2 is pretty good. Okay SP mode, great MP mode. Resistance 2 is also fun.
But, the games that people point to on the PS3 that are great are Uncharted, MGS4 (your reaction will depend on if you're a fan of MGS up to this point) and Valkyria Chronicles.
Yeah, new chat messages show up in the top right bezel, like sign on notifications.
precision:
Warhawk is fun but I just couldn't get into it. PA used to have a Warhawk day, but we haven't done that in ages.
LittleBigPlanet is an insane amount of fun online. It's probably my favorite game to play multi-player.
Resistance 2 has 9 player (or something like that) class-based co-op. I still don't have this game but it's supposed to be loads of fun online.
Resident Evil 5 has online co-op which is very fun.
as for games you must play, regardless of MultiPlayer:
Uncharted (3rd person shooter mixing Prince of Persia climbing, Gears of War cover, and Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones setting... the voice acting, story and cinematic quality are top notch)
Ratchet & Clank : Tools of Destruction (shooter / platformer)
Flower (indescribable)
Valkyria Chronicles (SRPG with a fantastic art style)
The PS3 bluetooth headset is $50 and is great quality. Comes with a little dock. You should get it if you don't have a USB headset or something already.
For single player games check out Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Valkyria Chronicles, and MGS 4.
For racing, I recommend Wipeout HD (psn) Burnout Paradise (psn and disc) or Motorstorm 2 (disc only).
Wife/GF Coop games (All of these games are great single player as well, but best with coop)
Definately check out Pixel Junk's Monsters and Eden on PSN. Monsters is a fantastic Tower Defense game with two player offline coop, its very wife/gf friendly. (My wife and I played the hell out of this game.) Eden is a lot of fun too, but requires a higher level of platforming skill.
Little Big Planet. Great fun coop. (up to 4 players, can have mix of offline and online) Online coop can be laggy though.
These are all console exclusives, cause I'm not sure if you have a 360 or not. (except for Paradise, but its best on psn anyway)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
How is Folklore?
How about downloaded games?
Am I right thinking that PS3 is region free, correct?
Haven't played either of those games so I can't tell you.
There are a lot of good games on psn, but since I don't know if you have an xbox and what your tastes are I'll just list some of my favorite exclusives. I highly recommend Pixel Junk Monsters and Pixel Junk Eden. Motorstorm HD is great if you like racers. (Its hard by very rewarding also looks fucking beautiful in 1080p). Flower is pretty awesome but short. (If you haven't already bought the 360 version, check out Bionic Command Rearmed, Megaman 10 and worms)
PS3 games are region free. ps1 and ps2 games are not.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
If you buy only 1 PSN game, it should be Flower.
Bionic Commando is great on the 360, and available on PSN. The Pixeljunk games are highly regarded, but I have yet to play the demos.
Speaking of which many games have demos, including retail games. Get to downloading!

I do have the 360, I am all over the board when it comes to games to play. I enjoy them all.
Also, gonna get Disgaea 3 soon.
@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
Are you saying this Update shut off the PS3's connection to the internet? Or am I misunderstanding?
(Oh, and Disgaea 3 is enjoyable.)
I've only played about half of Folklore 'cause I rented it once but didn't bother renting it again, more due to laziness than anything else.
It's a solid title with neat game mechanics and an interesting sort of fantasy/mystery/noir-ish story. Very solid presentation, great graphics. Only downside is you have to play through each zone twice, once as each character, to advance.
Do... Re... Mi... So... Fa.... Do... Re.... Do...
Forget it...
also as far as disgaea 3 goes someone get the multiplayer DLC! i bought it but i havent even fired it up to mess with it yet. still i figure having people from here on board will make it more fun.
Littlebigplanet - joyful platformer.
Resistance: Fall of Man - good FPS, though online has moved to R2 as far as I know.
Resistance 2 - great FPS, awesome online.
Killzone 2 - great FPS with visuals that are mindblowing, if that's your thing. Good online.
MGS4 - it's metal gear. Over the top, bombastic military soap opera.
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune - it's a better Tomb Raider game than any Tomb Raider game.
Valkyria Chronicles - awesome SRPG.
