Southland - It's like Gangland, only serialized

Hulu has a sneak peek episode up of Southland, a show coming to NBC. Since we've been left with a huge gap in gritty cop shows now that both The Wire and The Shield are over, it seems to at least try to fill that gap.
From Emmy Award winners John Wells, Ann Biderman and Chris Chulack comes a raw and authentic look at the police unit in Los Angeles. From the beaches of Malibu to the streets of East Los Angeles, "Southland" is a fast-moving drama that will take viewers inside the lives of cops, criminals, victims and their families.
Michael Cudlitz ("A River Runs Through It") plays John Cooper a seasoned Los Angeles cop assigned to train young rookie Ben Sherman (Benjamin McKenzie, "The O.C."). Cooper's honest, no-nonsense approach to the job leaves Sherman questioning whether or not he has what it takes to become a police officer.
Cudlitz and McKenzie are joined by other cast members including Regina King ("Ray," "Jerry Maguire") who plays Detective Lydia Adams. Adams lives with and is the primary caregiver of her mother. Her partner, Detective Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott, "Boiler Room") is an unhappily married father of three. Michael McGrady ("The Thin Red Line") plays Detective Daniel "Sal" Salinger. Sal oversees fellow gang detectives Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro, "Drive," "Ugly Betty") and Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy, "Alpha Dog"). Arija Bareikis ("Crossing Jordan") plays as patrol officer Chickie Brown, a single mom who dreams of being the first woman accepted into SWAT.
I've seen the first episode and I have to say that it's quite hectic, but it does seem to have some running feet and might be capable of filling the gap left by some of the best shows (Wire, Shield) being gone.
Ew, the guy who destroyed seasons five and six of the West Wing is behind it? Eeeeeek.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.
Like I said in the Chuck thread, there is nothing appealing about this show. The preview makes me we want to wretch with how sanctimonious and heavy handed it is...
"you get to take a criminal off the street... that's gods work." are you fucking kidding me? I'd rather go back and watch episodes of Cop Rock... at least they sang on that show.

I wouldn't judge it by that commercial. Of course they're going to play up shit like that for a show coming into ER's slot. They did that to ER and ER was nothing like that when you watched, at least the early stuff which I actually watched.

They used The National at the end of the first show so I do have to give them props for that at least.
I'll wait and see what the PA consensus is. I'll set my needle from vehemently against to cautiously pessimistic.
Part of me is biased, because every new show that fails makes it that much more likely for Chuck to be renewed.

I'm in this position as well. Plus fuck John Wells.

Except Chuck has sucked a lot for a while now. There has been maybe one or two good shows this season. Anywho, I think there is a Chuck thread so this is all I'll say on the topic of Chuck.
well, regardless of Chuck, does the world even need another cop show? Is there something that hasn't been covered that networks wouldn't piss themselves over before covering? I submit that there is not. Frankly, I'm all for a legislative ban on cop, lawyer, and hospital dramas. And comedies.

The institutions in our society should constantly be explored, even if it's repetitious most of the time.
Believe me, if they did any exploring I'd be simply amazed. The Shield explored... the dreck on NBC does not.

I just watched the episode on hulu and I liked it. It's well produced, and it really is to cops what ER is to doctors, not a procedural but just the day-to-day life of the various levels of the police force.
