Binghamton Shooting/Hostage Situation

AroducAroduc regular
edited April 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/04/03/binghamton.shooting/index.html

The short/current version is 4 dead, more wounded, and a guy holed up in the American Civic Association in Binghamton holding a bunch of people hostage.

Man... I used to live about 40 miles away. It's hard to figure out intelligent details despite the 24 hour news networks actually covering real news for once.

Also... hostage situation... ugh... this cannot end well.

Actually, it looks like it may have just ended and now I feel a little silly. Apparently it was "two Asians brought out the back in handcuffs along with a group of people."

Way to earn your keep, CNN.

Edit: Or not. Don't they realize that they handcuff hostages too?

My house is like three blocks from there. I was going to post a thread on this tomorrow, when people have some idea of what the fuck is going on.

As it is, currently it's just a demonstration of how news outlets act when they have no idea what the fuck is going on.

WBNG is saying that the police have [strike]the shooters[/strike] two guys in handcuffs and are bringing [strike]the hostages[/strike] more guys out of the building but they still don't know what is going on.

A lot of people got shot, though. What the fuck was this all about?

Was it a couple of days ago we had that shooting at the retirement home?

I remember Fox News was on the TV at work, and they were asking "What were the shooter's motives?"

I've got one, how about that the shooter was fucking psychotic?

By the strictest definition of the word, no.

But it could be argued that jumping to that conclusion first means that you presupposed the race of the individual involved based upon the circumstances, and in today's world that = racism.

No, not really. Self preservation and all.

But I'm willing to bet this guy was an immigrant himself who had trouble dealing with the government's immigration policies. Maybe he was out of work and was going to be deported, so he lost his mind. I don't know, I'm just throwing things out there.

Which means I'm doing just as good a job of reporting as the major news networks.

I can't figure out if murder/suicides are egotistical or cowardly...

is it more "They can't live without me so I need to kill them to save them" or is it "I can't go by myself, so I'll take them with me."

On the one hand, I doubt it matters... on the other hand, it seems important for some reason. Either way... this shit is so depressing.

While it may be pointless (and ultimately untruthful) to blame a single person, a big part of me would like to blame fearmongers like Glenn Beck.

Instead of facing the inevitable economic downturn with a "stiff upper lip" as the Brits say, all sorts of media outlets are screaming fear and doom... only making it worse in the end, with more suicides, more people trying their damnedest to stop the inevitable ebb and flow of capitalism, blaming Obama to the point where he loses the 2012 election, etc.

People are being prodded to freak the fuck out, and they are doing it with gusto... in short, yet another example of how Humanity seems to be ruled by emotions, not rationality. We COULD be doing some thing to make this inevitable "depression" a bit easier on all of us... but of course we're not going to. We COULD have tossed free-market capitalism to the curb when it bit all of our asses 80 years ago... but no, that'd take maturity to admit we were wrong. And this sort of maturity requires rationality. And rational people don't listen to Glenn Beck's every word, try to flip three houses they can't afford, or act like they can ignore the rules of capitalism.

tl;dr - People be crazy, mon.

    @ thread:

This is pretty terrible, this is what happens when a nation lives in fear. One of the reasons why I cheered so much when Obama won over there, spreading hope of a better future is exactly what needs to be done in this day and age.

Of course, with people simply not trusting him, going so far as to hate him with all their being, and with utter crap like the "Obama deception" out there...

On a regular basis I feel like slapping sense into people, but it's never that easy.

Dude NO! My mom used to have classes there. We have a family friend that was supposed to be in that class. It dosen't matter where you live People died! So 40mins away vs a country away it dosen't matter This was just all kinds of messed up.

On topic: Do you think it had anything to do with a persons American Dream being ruined after being fired and trying to stop others from making the same mistake? I don't know why that was the first thing I thought after getting the information of him being fired. Too much College I guess it's the Critical Assuming.

The most horrible ones are the guys who take out their family. Like that british dude a while back who shot his wife and teenager daughter because he was in debt and he didnt want them to go on being poor after being used to the high life. Its abhorent and monstrous, I cannot reconcile the thought process of someone like that with anything I know, its just inhuman.

I mean the guys daughter could've grown up, been anything, recovered, or stayed in poverty, it doesnt matter. These people never blame themselves, everyone else has to pay for their failure, its so awful and typical and sad.

They don't always do it for the same reason - that they blame their family. Often the stress gets to them, and they don't want the family to live and deal with the stress of their debts, unemployment, etc that they've gone through. I'm not saying that I think it's ok, but it's not just "my family fucking sucks, they should die with me."

The fact is, the family annihilator is something we don't really understand much yet because there's been no outrage. Publicity goes to the ones who go out and kill a bunch of strangers. The fathers or mothers who kill off their family fade from the headlines the second they're reported.

I seriously doubt any of these people were intending violent revolution against the government... If they were, an immigrant's center and a nursing home would certainly be very odd places for them to start.
