Ok, so when I got my laptop it had Nero Smart Essentials, which I have surmised is utter shit. I don't need anything to crazy, but I want to be able to burn data/mp3 (jukebox) .... dvds would be nice, but not necessary ...

Any ideas of something that won't crush my wallet?

I've had good success using InfraRecorder, which is free and open source. It'll write to both CDs and DVDs, and supports data, audio CD and video DVDs. It also supports writing to or reading from .ISO and .BIN disc image files. Some of the burning options can be a bit non-intuitive but you can't really beat the price, unless you can find someone who will pay you to use their burner software.

If it came with Vista it writes CDs/DVDs on it's own. Never really had a problem with using it.

I was going to suggest Nero as I've never personally had any qualms about it, but eh.
