So I have a Toshiba laptop and an old TV. I have this part.

Why can I not get my laptop to display on the TV? When I go Display Options>Extend My Desktop Onto This Monitor>Apply, it just reverts to the original settings.

Thanks in advance.

edit: this part

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite a205. I'm going VGA to the yellow bit of the red-white-yellow cables (composite?) that you'd see used to connect a DVD player.

    First time trying it.

ugh these can be a pain sometimes. it may be that your old tv doens't have the resolution to hold your computers video afloat so the computer ditches it. this would also be why it has lower settings when you come back. if you know someone with a newer better tv try hooking it up there and see if there's any difference. make sure you are on the component channel for the tv and not just 3 or any other normal channel

I think that trying a newer TV is the next step. Unfortunate that it didn't work right off the bat; I've been trying to convince the old man to ditch cable.

    Anyway, thanks for the responses.
