So the DSi launched and I bought one (It's Blue <3), along with Chinatown Wars, TWEWY, and Ninja Gaiden DS thanks to the recommendation of this thread (thanks gents).

So I figured we could keep going since there are so many damn gems on the console (I skipped over Civilization Revolution, Soul Bubbles, Drawn to Life, and a few others just yesterday alone at EB).

So we know about all the awesome games made by Nintendo and the larger third parties, but what about the smaller, lesser known games? I read a thread today about a game called Air Traffic Chaos that i'm gonna hunt for next. Anybody have a little known game that they just swear by?

Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ was pretty decent for being a bargain title ($14 new). It's a top down shooter where you hold the stylus where you want to shoot, and you can tap along the bottom of the bottom screen to move your character left and right.

Ninja Town was pretty fun for a while too if you like Tower Defense games. I got mine during black friday when it was $9.99 at best buy. More than worth it for that, now it'll cost you $30, I'm not sure I'd pay that, but it's very polished for what it is.

Teenage Zombies: Invasion fo the Alien Brain Thingies was a quirky little platformer. It felt more like a flash game than anything, but I had picked it up for $7, and it wasn't terrible.

I had picked all three of these games up based on their titles alone.

    Glory Days 2

It's basically Choplifter, but much expanded. Great soundtrack, but after the first 5 or so missions, the game bumped up the difficulty and became almost impossible for me.

Jesus christ yes. Having to remember to buy tanks and men while destroying legions of enemies who have enhanced armor or some bullshit is impossible. And it was mission 5 of 9 or something.

From what I understand there are two things going on at once but you can only do one at a time.

You kill monsters and they go to the bottom screen as colored blocks. They gradually rise up like a Tetris wall or something and if they reach the top they revive and pester you again. So periodically you pause the top screen and go kill the baddies again in touchscreen puzzle mode.

Doesn't sound all that special from a description but it has a lot of style.

There's a bit more to it than that. First off, the platforming section is quite well done and bursting with style. There are hidden exits to find, you can juggle enemies with your attacks to earn more money, it's very well paced as far as introducing new concepts/enemies/whathaveyou, etc. It would be a damn fine game by itself.

And then there's the bottom screen. True, you need to clear out the defeated baddies before they come back, but by matching blocks you can activate power ups that help you in the platformer. You can also fire a shot, go to the puzzle world (which freezes the platforming), match some blocks and come back to the platformer to find the shot you fired has gone from a wimpy bullet to a mammoth blast. You can also heal yourself, make yourself younger or even activate tea time, which transforms you into a giant robot.

I think it's one of those games that's more than the sum of its parts. Also, it's hard. If you go in expecting a cakewalk, you'll get your ass handed to you a couple hours in.

Woohoo I am one of six.

If you want a damn hard platformer / action adventure with a twist then Henry Hatsworth is by far the way to go.

While I doubt it really applies here, because it's not really a small dev., but Elite Beat Agents is $4.99 used this week at GameStop. My brother bought a copy, I borrowed it and beat the whole thing, and I'm really debating getting one of my own now. Part of me says I beat it - it's over. Nothing left to do. Save your $5.

Another part of me craves "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire at any moment, without having to haggle with a 12 year old to borrow his cart.

You haven't beaten squat if you haven't beaten it on its highest difficulty with the
Elite Beat Divas, and then after that, you unlock Commander Kahn to dance with the Divas

There's also unlockable songs based on your combined high scores among all difficulties.

You'd really turn down something as infinitely replayable and fun as Elite Beat Agents when it would only be $5? Can you even buy all the songs individually for $5?

Buy that game already! If there's anything that justifies the existence of the DS and its two screen/touch screen design, it's Elite Beat Agents.

I love the first puzzle quest, but galactrix takes the very worst parts of the first game and forces you to do it repeatedly. Another annoying thing is you basically have to find schematics for every new "spell" you want to learn and then play a crafting minigame. I played for about 10 hours and still only had one attack ability.

It was so frustrating that I traded it in and picked up a copy of the original, which is still awesome.

That's an interesting comment. I can understand it in the context of something like Rogue or Nethack where it's all ascii, but Shiren is a good looking game. It's a SNES game originally, but the sprites look very nice on the DS so I'm sure Sega did some work to clean it up. Could you elaborate on your feelings?

It's not the graphics I have a problem with, but the 2-3 frame animations for everything from walking to attacking.

That and aside from the character sprites, I see no difference between Shiren the Wanderer, Pokémon and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon. They all look like reskins of the same game.

In many ways they are. Shiren is a bit more complicated but it's still nowhere near Nethack levels. Or even Castle of the Winds.

I have to say I am really disappointed with the Japanese Mystery Dungeon series, they're just no replacement for the PC roguelikes that have been around for ages. It's like they aren't sure what sort of game to make it, they try to balance it too much and remove much of the fun randomness, and they feel more arcadey. They're full of very specific mechanics that simplify things too much.

Yes, even Shiren, which can have some interesting random occurences...it just doesn't grab me.

Also the fact that you can't equip everything under the sun ala Diablo.

Vastly under appreciated survival-horror/fps on the DS. Great atmosphere and controls. This is one of those fun games to play at 10:00 at night with all the lights off and your headphones on. I have to stress the head phones because the small sounds in this game add some great creepiness to the game. The only problem with this game is a pretty ghetto save system. Overall a great game, and a surprisingly good survival horror game considering the graphics/system.

Anyone play any good adventure games for the DS recently? I own Hotel Dusk, but I was horribly bored by it, and I plan to buy Broken Sword for the Wii.

I suppose Phoenix Wright doesn't count as an "adventure game", does it?

Trace Memory comes to mind but I can't see that interesting you if you didn't like Hotel Dusk.

Sidenote, how do you like TWEWY?

To be honest I don't think any have come out besides Broken Sword. It's been a long time since Phoenix Wright.

Phoenix Wright is great, which is why I've played every one (I just finished Apollo Justice a month ago).

As for TWEWY, I did a stupid thing and bought it as one of 3 games in one day, the other being Ninja Gaiden DS (for 15 bucks :D) and GTA: CW, which means i've only cracked the surface of each so far. From what I have played though, I love the combat system, (though it looks like I may have to break open the instruction manual to fully understand it) and the artstyle and music are great (i've been humming the main tune for 2 days now and I last played the game on Sunday, so i'm not blowing smoke.) Neku is an ass, but I've read that he lightens up over time, so that's cool.

It's a nice change of pace, especially since I'm noticing i'm starting to get tired of the traditional grind 'em RPGs.
