[Homebrew] Action! (Gauging Interest)

Hey All,

I am gauging interest for a roleplay heavy PBP game based on the most lovely of summer reading activities, action fiction! I say homebrew because it is based on a method that a group of friends and I made up one summer to play a PBeM game based on summer action flicks. So, basically, if you are interested let me know and if enough people like the idea of it, I'll post the game mechanics and all.

Basic Overview
Characters can be anything, but most likely to be accepted if they would be found in your common Matthew Reilly, Preston/Child, etc novel (Spies, soldiers, archeologists, scholars, detectives etc).

Players will be expected to post daily to a few times a week, this isn't going to be a game you have to give your life up for. If I post on the weekends it will be because I am stuck at work, otherwise my home PC doesn't turn on.

All you need to play will be an account here, an imagination, an invisible castle account and a stomach for over the top action adventure.

Thanks!

JK

Not much interest it seems, but I thought I would include the link to the Wiki I am creating for the game in an attempt to find people interested in playing. Thanks!

Putting in some info re: your homebrew system might help I suppose

People don't really want to get in for something they're totally blind about I think

As per INNS's suggestion, this LINK will lead you to the wiki with a beta description of the gameplay mechanics.

    Thanks!

Looks interesting, but I am unfamiliar with the cited authors. I'm more of a King/Crichton/Clancy guy myself.

I really like the emphasis on narrative and description though. I hope you get to run a game, would be awesome to follow.

    Thanks for the kind words.

While the author names are different, the writing is just another variation on the Crichton/Clancy mold. (Less Red Terror, more faceless corporation. Less detailed descriptions of highly technical mechanisms, more "Magic").

If I can get anyone to sign up I would look at this as more of a beta run through than anything else. We can tweak and play with the rules as it happens.

    Thanks again!

Before I stop spamming my own thread, I thought I would post the current storyline I am planning on running.

    EYES OF THE WORLD

    Book Jacket Summary:
The Book of Soyga, a 16th century Latin treatise of magic once owned by famed Elizabethan scholar John Dee of which only two copies are known to exist, has gone missing. In the wake of this theft the British library has been left stained with the blood of slaughtered security guards, bodies mutilated and arranged in the Exhibition gallery.

On the same day the Golenishchev papyrus is forcibly removed from the Moscow Museum of Fine Arts, leaving behind bodies of guards burnt to a crisp by flames.

A horrendous heat wave rages across the western coast of the United States, leading to brutal riots that cause hundreds of deaths. Freshman Senator Alex Wade attempts to disperse the crowds, but fails to contain their rage. When the police and national guard finally reach him, his battered and lifeless body is barely recognizable.

Yet three days later, he wanders from out the morgue asking for a ride to his campaign offices.

What do these events have in common? To the casual observer nothing, but to GEAR - the United State's Global thrEat Analysis Response team - nothing is random...

    Player Background:
Player's will take the part of either current, recruited, or accidental members of GEAR and be tasked with the resolution of these most current issues. Professions and specialities are open to your imagination (Although if you come up with a Bigfoot character, it better be better than the love child of Lee Majors).

The link a few entries above connects you to the A!A rules I would be using for this game, and also explains character creation. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks for the patience all.

Looks intriguing, color me interested. Its been a long while since I read any of the listed authors, but I loved the Preston/Child stuff.

Give me overnight to come up with a character in hopes this takes off. I'm thinking a field researcher of some sort, cataloging chemicals, plants, etc. Not sure how he'd get involved with GEAR yet; what kind of organization is it (how powerful, well known)?

I see GEAR as being one of those secret Government agencies that are funded through so many different line items in the greater budget that no one knows where the money is going. I can post a history of the group if anyone is interested.

I am pondering making an official recruitment thread, but don't want to push my luck.

I thought I would collect all the information in one place.

Game Title: "Eyes of the World"
System: Action! Anonymous (Homebrew system. Info here
    Game Information:

    Information on GEAR:
    Global thrEat Analysis Response Team

The GEAR Group was founded by President Grover Cleveland as part of an inner circle of advisers that the President collected to keep him informed of events outside the usual politics that took up his day to day life. Headed by the man that Cleveland had hired to fight for him in the Civil War, George Benninsky, the group (Then known simply as Cleveland's Circle, or the "Circle) would meet nightly to discuss events around the world.

Knowing that there would need to be a constant basis within the Government to protect it against outside threats that it's military was not prepared for, the Circle would exist even after Cleveland left office. Notable actions include the creation and constant upgrading of the B.O.C computer system, ending the Jack the Ripper murders and several other extremely classified activities.

Currently the Circle, or GEAR as it came to be known in whispers and rumors, is funded through a thousand different Government agencies without their knowledge and makes its home underneath the Washington Monument. It acts without the general Government's notice, answering only to the President. Drawing its staff from only the finest minds of the military and academic world, as well as those that have found their paths crossed with them, GEAR is often the first and last line of defense against threats that no one else saw coming.

Might want to wait a while before starting a new thread or try changing the thread title. I'm not sure how CF works in regard to promoting games though.

    Here's a character concept:
    Name: Joshua Hogan
    Age: 28
    Sex: Male
    Profession: Field Scientist
    Specialty: Biology
Skills/Traits: First Aid, Forensics (Still considering what the third skill would be)

Background: Joshua was a promising biologist who landed a position with a major pharmaceutical corporation's research division. It all came to a halt four months into an Amazon expedition, taking samples and classifying new frogs and the fungi they ate. A sudden and deadly infection forced Joshua's return to America, into the arms of GEAR

While still recovering in the hospital, GEAR approached the scientist with a request. Homeland Security had intercepted a batch of highly toxic spores. It might be the only shipment, it might not. Just in case, the recruiter wanted to know, could Joshua create a cure?

He was in, his contract with the corporation renegotiated to an "advisory" position, Joshua's new loyalties to GEAR. Three years later and he's still working for the organization as a first responder to the scene. He's picked up a few new skills in medicine and examining evidence; not enough to be a pro, but he can hold down the fort until they arrive.

That works really well FB. I can run this as a solo adventure if you're interested, although getting one or two more would be the best.

I'd really love to see another person or two, because solo RP always sounds weird to me. If you need a hand testing the mechanics (what few there are), guess I'm game.

I'm considering joining. It sounds like an interesting concept, though I am not convinced I would enjoy it. How sci-fi can we get here? Are we just talking cool black box gadgets, or more? I don't want to involve the supernatural exactly, but I am currently on a big JL Bourne/Alex Garland kick. Viral zombies, that is. I read this thread and a character sprung to mind - a highly educated biochemist and archaeologist dedicated to the occult, but specifically regarding zombie outbreaks during history. Indiana Jones-esque, but I'm not trying to make a clone of him. Never seen without his trusty, matte-black titanium prybar... ok, well not never.
The difficulty comes in that he is not a crackpot... his beliefs are based in reality, however rare. That might not be cool for your world.

Even if that is OK, I'd need to read more to be sure I'm in, but I figured I would ask up front.

I would work up a better character profile, not to worry.

If you watch or have seen the show Fringe or even early X-Files, that's about as far into "sci-fi" as I would think we would go. Both your character idea and Firebug's would work fine for this adventure due to the nature of the story I have worked up.

One more and we'd have enough. Bug you friends!

Sweet, there's hope yet. I'll finish up my character.

Any more background info about GEAR/the current world we should know? I'm wondering what the B.O.C computer is.

Pretty much how the world existed in real life just prior to the last election, and GEAR is an unknown Federal Agency that only answers to the president. There is a few Senator's that are always sniffing around the funding but never get anywhere. Current head of GEAR is Eric Dae Reyes, a brilliant analyst recruited from the CIA in the early 90's. Obviously there is a lot of chaos in the world, several people are running for the presidency (Alex Wade among them), and the rash of odd thefts and the riots is just adding to the crisis.

    B.O.C stands for

    Big
    Ol
    Computer

Damned hippies and their computer making.
