So I just built this new computer yada yada yada
anyway
I've never used Vista before. As you have most likely deduced, I AM using it now. It's a bit confusing having everything moved around, but that's nothing I can't get over.
Problem: When I leave it on for a long time, It'll go into it's little hibernation thing. Except I can't wake it up. I do my best Zoolander impression, clicking, banging the keyboard, touching buttons on the computer. Nothing. I'll actually have to restart the computer manually.

TL;DR HURR DURR I AM CAVEMAN

    This is a laptop?

You've tried holding down the power button?

If it's in the sleep mode, a quick press of the power button should bring it back to life -- assuming everything is working properly.

If you can't get it to work properly, then you can change the settings by going through the following menus:

windows key -> type power options, press enter -> Change Plan Settings (on your current plan) -> Put the computer to sleep: -> Never -> save changes

Power Options are also available through control panel, but since we're on vista it's time to get used to the pure joy that is the vista start menu search.

Ideally you probably want to get sleep mode working, though. On my computer, it's about 5 seconds from computer powered off in sleep mode to logged in and browsing forums.

I actually have the same hibernation problem on my desktop, and have to hold the power down to fix it. Then turn it on, which the fan goes constantly and remains in this state without booting, then hold power again until it shuts off. Only then, when I turn it back on again, does it say restoring from hibernation.

The problem is hibernation. i don't have the problem with Sleep (I use this all the time). They are two different things, Google how to outright disable hibernation entirely. Test sleep out, and see it that ones works for you.

It's a known bug with Vista that letting it hibernate kinda breaks it.

Don't let your computer go into hibernation, set it to turn of the monitors (or just turn off) after a specified time period. (Right click desktop>personalization>screensaver)

Also, splurge on Win7 when it comes out at the end of this year... I'm currently running the beta on my computer, and it's awesome without the retardedness of vista. I mean... it has sticky notes... sticky notes are amazing.

Hibernation has been a struggle since the time of ME. Standby should be fine and require a keyboard hibernation require use of the power button.

Sleep mode or suspend mode is when the computer shuts off only some parts, and remains in a "suspended" state. Pressing a key will turn the computer on.

Hibernation however, makes an image of it's current state on the harddrive and then shuts down completely. Since the computer shut down, you have to press the power button to turn it on.

So, are you sure it's hibernation? I've never had any problems with hibernation on my computers. It was a godsend when 512mb of RAM was still the standard, but with bigger memory a computer would take longer to start up from hibernation than an actual reboot.

I just said hibernation because it is impossible to wake up peacefully.
It sure isn't sleep mode like on my XP computers, all i need is the duh mouse click or keyboard tap on those.

Go to power options (Or power profiles? I'm on XP right now), you can choose what you want your computer to do in certain time, from going to sleep mode, to turning off only hard drives to even lower your screen brightness.

Click the start button and type "power options" and press enter.

Click the radio button next to "High Performance" and choose "Change plan settings"

Here you can modify the timeouts for turning off the display or putting the computer to sleep. Click "Change advanced power settings," click the + next to "Sleep" and then the + next to "Hibernate after" and change it to 0 minutes (never)

You can also choose what the power button in the start menu does, on Vista it's default is to go to sleep.
