Sound on my laptop freezes in Vista

Ever since I installed SP1, sometimes the sound icon in the taskbar will freeze and I can't manipulate it.

See that little sound icon? Yeah, dunno why, but sometimes i'll click it to lower the volume, and it'll be unresponsive. Like it won't even open. So I go to control panel and into sounds and try to set the volume there, but then it freezes and say it has to end the process and then the little icon completely dissapears from my computer.

It'll say "the application is not responding. The program may respond again if you wait. Do you want to end this process?"

I have also been getting a lot of BSOD's lately aswell after installing SP1.

Anyone know whats up or how to fix this?

have you tried updating the drivers for your laptop's 'sound card'?
