External HDs on the 360?

SatanIsMyMotorSatanIsMyMotor Fuck Warren EllisRegistered User regular
I recently bought a comstar (yuck, I know) 640 gig portable HD that I would like to use with my 360 for media. For some reason my 360 doesn't read the HD. What the heck am I doing wrong here?

Some brief research online reveals talk of NTFS and FAT32 drives. I assume I'm experiencing some sort of compatibility issue. Any advice?

Format using above file system. You'll have access to the full capacity of the drive under both Windows (using MacDrive), Xbox 360, or Mac OS X.

    Does he have a mac?
Without a mac I would never format it HFS+
Format for windows, since at minimum, Macs can read but not write all current window standards.
Your option - if he doesn't have a mac - would cost money just to use it in windows (which odds are he uses as his primary os)

Bzzzzt. Something tells me the topic of the thread went whoosh right over your head.

    It's a 640 gig drive.

    The Xbox360 doesn't read NTFS.

    What now?

    HFS+ is the correct solution.

FAT32 will work on a 640 GB drive, but FAT32 does not support individual files larger than 4GB.

(also, the 360 seriously doesn't support NTFS, but it does work with HFS+? That's the most retarded thing I can think of Microsoft doing.)

AFAIK it was done to support Ipods as Mass storage devices.
And yes, not supporting NTFS is pants-on-head retarded.
