So hey, the PA game on XBLA was 800 pts ($10) for Gold members; deal now dead
Forgive me, "PAA: OTRPOD 1" doesn't quite have the headline appeal I'm looking for. I poked around in the separate subforum for the PAA games but it looks abandoned. This price is only good until Monday, but I picked it up on a lark and I'm genuinely impressed by how good it is. The game is a lot tougher than the demo made it seem to be when I first played it months ago, and if you like the comic at all the writing is pitch perfect.
The battle system is a really great amalgamation of different RPG styles, mostly Shadow Hearts and FFIV/VI with a dash of Mario & Luigi. A lot of the battles I'm encountering actually require good strategy to stay alive, and enemies are tough but HP regenerates after every battle, so the emphasis is more on good item usage and picking targets effectively to exploit weaknesses.
I know $10 is a lot easier to swallow than $20, so I'm glad I waited. Anyone else spring on it this week?

Damn, I bought the game for full price a few months ago.
Oh well. everyone who's on the edge should really check the game out. It's actualyl really well made and a lot of fun. And if you like the PA style of humour (which, you know, I assume you do by posting on these forums and all) then you pretty much have to play it. The game is incredibly well written.
I also picked this up at the discounted price, and I love the writing. I'm at the very beginning so I need to get used to the combat, but so far so good.
I finished this on Friday, and it was perfect at $10, though I probably would have balked if I had paid $20. It lasted me about three play sessions, so maybe 5 hours, but it's an interesting experiment as an episodic RPG. I liked how streamlined a lot of things were—HP refills after every battle, and no MP/spells but consumable items are in huge supply so you're encouraged to bust them out all of the time. The battles started getting tough in the last area, and since every single enemy type had different strengths and weaknesses (and you couldn't grind for XP) you were encouraged to use good tactics. You also got really hammered with damage and stat weaknesses if you didn't learn how to block well.

And yeah, the price is a lot easier to swallow now. Seems like anything above 800 points is a big mental barrier to me.
Well, except for Braid.
And Portal.

Not yet played, because Blue Dragon finally became fun and is eating my time.
Can't you make a custom PA-style duder in this? Because that would be pretty cool.
