I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and I have a partition that is formatted for the FAT32 FS. Every file, folder, and what not is constantly set to Read Only. I change it in the properties of the file, I run the attrib command in the command line but it always changes back to Read Only. Anyone know how to fix this?
Maybe Windows XP isn't digging your use of the attrib command? I think maybe you should try right clicking said files or folders and checking off the read only tag.
Just a thought..
But yea, when you have the time, convert to NTFS. Much more efficient use of disk space.
I think you've got some sort of malware, or a corrupt system file or something. I've never heard of something that bizarre. If I were you, I'd reformat and reinstall.
I don't believe it's malware. I don't know if it's corrupt FS.
I'm pretty resigned to the fact that I'm going to need to format and reinstall but am dragging my feet with it and posted here to see if there were any other options.
When I was making the partitions I used the linux distro to size things and told it to format for FAT32 so yes.
I'll run chkdsk and see what it turns up but I think I'm going to end up formatting .
I ended up formatting. Apparently there was something far more devious at hand.
I pop in my WinXP disk to format and it thinks that I've only gone half way through the install process. Once it loads the drivers for the install environment it starts copying files to the hard drive. After it's done with that it tries to set up windows on a partition that doesn't exist and then claims that said partition was corrupt, then reboots and the process loops.
With this happening I install Windows Vista RC1. The install went really smoothly and all of my shit didn't get lost in the process.
But now I have Windows Vista RC1 installed..... God help me.
I'll probably play around with Vista RC1 and see how well it fares. I can just format it now that the XP installation has unfucked itself.
So not solved, but my problem is gone. Does that make sense?
I'd suggest setting up 2 partitions on your 1 hard drive. Set a small partition aside for Linux and put a larger one for Windows XP. I set mine at 20GB for my OS partition then 110GB for all my programs, just cleans things up.

CONVERT it to NTFS.
type "convert /?" at a command line for more info.

Other than that, it sounds like something is running amok on your system.

Convert <Drive letter> /FS:NTFS
You'll have to reboot the machine, and it'll convert. Once you convert it, you can't go back.
