Significant Performance loss from PCI-E 2.0 card in 1.0 slot?

Would there be a significant performance loss with putting a PCI-e 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot?

I know there will be some performance loss from it running at the older specification, my main question is would it be enough of a loss to forgo a current gen card and pick up a PCI-e 1.0 card?

You would lose some performance compared to running it in a 2.0 motherboard, but it is largely a theoretical matter for you. Even in a 1.0 motherboard, a current gen card will probably be better than whatever you have now, and it will get even better if you upgrade your motherboard down the road.

What card do you have now?

    Onboard.

Primary concern was if there would be enough of a performance loss in general from the 2.0 to 1.0stepdown to warrant getting and older card that was 1.0, or if the loss was minimal enough that a current gen card would be the more ideal purchase, because the current gen is what I was pining for.

Even with the minimal loss, a current gen card would be faster than any 1.0 cards that are still sold.

Just make sure that your powersupply can handle whatever card you get. If your PC is a pre-built Dell or something, you may need to upgrade the PSU too.

Nah I built it, I'm good on all the other specs. I just wasn't familiar with the PCI-E revisions and wanted to double check on it is all.

I read something about this, I believe 2.0 on the mobo just allows more bandwidth transferred from the card to the board, however even for new cards the PCI-E 1.0 slots are more then capable of handling the the bandwidth the highend cards deliver. I was always under the impression it was a kind of future proofing.
I may be wrong though :P
