Recommend me Website and Domain hosting.

I am going to be launching a blog in the coming months and I am building up my site using Word Press. Everything is coming along swimmingly but I hit a barrier. I don't know where to get hosting from or where I should buy my domain.

I want my domain host and website host separate, so I won't get any issues with keeping my site name if my host decides to screw me over. Other than that, I welcome any personal recommendations.

Woo inexperience.

Have done my domains with GoDaddy. (Like 4 so far.) $10 for the domain and then like $9 for privacy, then slap on a code (go watch a revision3.com show like co-op or trs for a code) and it's like $18-19 per year after tax.

Have hosted sites on GoDaddy, ADDR, and Dreamhost.

GoDaddy hosting is just the cheapest for a non-profit I volunteer for. It works, nothing fancy, loads kind of slowly.

ADDR was a couple years ago. They failed to bill me for like 3 months, I had to talk to a live chat rep to set up my database, and the site loaded slowly. Pretty terrible overall.

Dreamhost has been the best by far. Other hosts have been slow on initial lookup->load but Dreamhost loads pretty instantly for me. Best part was I went there randomly on 3/27 and they had some March Madness deal where I got a year of hosting for a month's worth of fees. But even beyond that it's like $10 a month for a fast server and no "oh shit you went over and now we're going to rape you" cap.

So personal recommendation is GoDaddy for domain and Dreamhost for hosting.

I have been using godaddy for my domain and hosting for a few years and I have been happy with them. Basic linux hosting is only like $4 a month.

Dreamhost looks really nice. If I get hosted there, I also get a free domain name as well (against my better judgement). Tempting.

If you get the hosting from them just be sure you get private registration. The last thing you want is a bunch of internet fruits doing a whois on your domain and getting all your info.

If you're not dealing with major space/bandwidth requirements (as I envision would be the case for a startup personal blog), I'm a big fan of NearlyFreeSpeech. Rather than a flat monthly fee you actually pay by the megabyte/gigabyte for storage/bandwidth. I've had months where I've paid less than a dollar for some of my particularly low-traffic clients, and they've been very reliable with fantastic customer service. Their system isn't perfect, but it's absolutely perfect for something like a personal blog.

    Noooooo!

Dreamhost have a reputation that can be best described as 'sketchy', or more accurately - things may well go bad and if they do, you're buggered. Sideways.

Likewise, DO NOT get your domain from your hosting provider. Keep your domain separate from your host, that way if you have problems with your host you have way less hassle trying to move your site away (and don't risk losing your site entirely).

For hosting think about three main things: speed, reliability and support.

There is a lot of overselling in the hosting market and it's easy to get reeeled in by offers of huge bandwidth and diskspace for very little money. Most providers that offer hundreds of gigs of transfer (offers of unlimited = AVOID) for a few dollars are oversubscribing their servers and you will see problems because of it.

Remember to consider (and read) your potential hosts T&C's and usage policy before you sign up. Will your site have any adult orientated material? if so, some hosts won't accept it and you risk getting shut down.

Don't get locked into contracts. Most good hosts work on a month by month basis and this will give you the most freedom to cut and run if you aren't satisifed, rather than being stuck with them if things go sour.

Think about where your main audience is coming from and try to pick a host with a datacenter nearby(ish). It'll generally give you a faster loading site for your visitors.

Consider the laws where your server will be located, not just where you are. What you say/do may be okay where you are, but if it ruffles someone who then reports your site and it's in breach of the local laws, then you may just get shut down anyway.

Oh, and generally, it's a good rule to pay a little more for quality. It's a sentiment usually lost in the the hosting market, but it holds true.

For domain registers, I tend to use GoDaddy for .com's and other international domains. They're great as long as you're not doing anything illegal/spamming/phishing, in which case they'll shut down your domain in a heartbeat.

For hosting, start on something small - a shared plan should do. Your site will be new and won't be using that much diskspace or bandwidth. You can always upgrade later if you need to.

www.webhostingtalk.com - big forum, lots of providers and a good place to ask questions and do research.

A couple off the top of my head

    DownTownHost.com - Good rep.
Cyberwurx.com - great reputation. Adult friendly.
a1websolutions.com - small, but with a good reputation. Adult friendly.
Reliablesite.net - I use them. No problems. Nice CP. Adult friendly.
    webair.com - I've heard they're good.

My best suggestion. Find a host you think will suit your needs, then do a search for it on the main web hosting forum at webhostingtalk to check for problems.

Fake edit: oh bugger, that was a lot of text.

tl:dr - Get your domain and host separately. Don't go for the cheapest option. Read the host's T&C's before signing up and consider where your audience will be coming from.

I am going to go with Dreamhost for now because you can get a year of website hosting for 10 dollars as a promotion (so it's not a huge loss). I'll go with goDadddy for my domain (it's .ca anyway. so dreamhost does not have it).

Does this sound solid? I can always go to a different host when the year is up.

I've never had a problem with dreamhost that customer service didn't solve in a relatively quick manner. They also have wordpress as a 1 click install, which is handy if you don't know much about setting up a database. You should be fine with them.

EDIT: Assuming yours is a relatively small, personal site. If you start getting major traffic (5 figure monthly uniques, etc), a more expensive (and reliable) hosting service may be appropriate.

I've used a variety of hosts and registrars in the past, but have since migrated everything to Godaddy. Pretty inexpensive, very reliable, and the customer service has been excellent when I've needed something.

What do you know, I've been thinking about the same thing too: blog on wordpress, getting a domain for it, and I'm utterly confused by which host to use. Seems like every single host has its share of customers that despise it.

Pretty much this. I've heard bad things about pretty much every hosting company out there. GoDaddy being among the worst. At the end of the day it's the experience you have personally. I've never had a problem with Dreamhost, but I know people who have, so it doesn't bother me so much because in general, my experience has been good.

I use siteground, but it sounds more expensive than dreamhost. Service is great though, and I get 750 gigs of space, which is ridiculous. Been using them for a bit over a year. Haven't ever noticed the site go down. Pretty much everything is unlimited or virtually unlimited.

Yeah, it seems like it's been pretty much luck of the draw. That's my impression anyway. GoDaddy generally has the best deals, usually the best big-name support but when they mess up they mess up hard and they don't mind screwing you over. All the other hosting companies have their share of "wow, i had a bad experience with support with them".

I've heard good things about certain "indie" hosts - the small ones that are minimalist in infrastructure and hosting and such - but sometimes they just don't have enough reputation to be reliable. I can't think of any off the top of my head but there's been a few.

I'd recommend going to Dreamhost if you willing to choose a host right now. The 10 dollars for a year of hosting thing is a nearly-free trial. I just did that now.

If it's a personal blog with no need for backend stuff (databases, Flash, etc), there's no reason to rush out and spend money on paid hosting. Just use Blogger or Wordpress or other free hosting solutions and forward a domain to it. Lots of space, fairly fast loading and highly customizable for just about any small scale blog. Considering most people quit blogging after the first month (pitiful traffic, came in gungho and burned out posting 10 times a day, various other reasons), there's nor eason to throw out any money for hosting until you've spent some time actually blogging.

Yeah, otherwise you have no link of ownership, digitally, other than through your ISP and whatever computer you're physically using to play around with the hosting.

I am going to setting up a series of blogs under one network name, so real hosting is kind of nice.

I got Dreamhost for my hosting and GoDaddy for my domain. This thread is done I guess. Anyone else can use it.

whatever you do, stay away from 1and1.com

they limit features to get the price down as low as it is (subdomains, etc) and when you register additional domains onto a single account so you can control them all with a single logon, they share those limited features. example: I wanted to set up a subdomain for each domain for it's email page, forum page, and others (they limit you to five subdomains per account), and ran out before I could finish.

their response? "oh, you should have made a separate account for each domain name, and no, we can't change it now". horrible customer service, and they took a good week or so before replying to my email.

after two years of owning the domains, they didn't think to send me a message when the credit card I had registered with them was past its expiration, nor when they couldn't bill it, so they just sent me to collections and called it a day.

and now when I cancelled my renewal of one of those domains they turned off the privacy feature BEFORE it has expired, exposing my info to the net , just as a final fuck you.
