So I recently beat Drakensang and enjoyed it.
But between that and having fun with Crysis I feel the need for some Action RPG fun for the PC.
A little stat-building and a little wizardry. Biggest requirement is awesome combat.
I have already played the living hell out of Mount & Blade.
So less point and clicky- more timed swings and being in the shit.
The Witcher sounds like what you are looking for; very deep RPG with a kickass story and actiony combat with mouse-clicky goodness. You can't spam the button like in Diablo and Titan Quest, it requires timed clicks to get the combos going correctly.
I don't know if the action-to-dicerolling ratio is high enough for "action-RPG" status, but Daggerfall's a pretty good game if you can get it running, and then there's Morrowind and Oblivion if you wanted (Morrowind I find kinda' meh, but Oblivion's combat can be fantastic with the right mods, and not exactly bad even without.
If you want a change of flavor from fantasy to sci-fi, Alien Shooter: Vengeance is a real neat Diablo-y game with some really ludicrous army segments, if you don't mind the slight Eastern-Europe B-camp flavor.

^^^ This.
If you want a great RPG, and you want combat that involves reasonable amounts of strategy and timed-clicks for attacking, The Witcher is the best possible choice.
Can I bring up Drakensang? I'm starting to find it more frustrating than fun, and I'm only a few hours into the game in Ferdock. I'm doing yet another underground cavern quest (Temple of Hesinde, Amoebas) and these things are becoming a pain in the ass to fight. I do so little damage to them. They surround me in groups now and I just ended up closing the game because I do not want to spend five minutes killing just one of them. It's not exactly a side-quest (it's the only quest I have available to do right now) so I don't think I can put it off until I get stronger. I could use some advice or incentive to keep playing, otherwise I might just start up a different RPG - Mask of the Betrayer, perhaps.

From someone who stopped playing Drakensang about halfway through - ebay it off and get Mask of the Betrayer, it's seriously a much better game. And you might also want to consider getting Mystery of Westgate as well, it's NWN2 premium module that should be released within the next couple of days (finally), and is supposedly just as great. The other NWN2 games aren't too shabby either.

I actually already have Mask of the Betrayer, I've just never finished NWN2 or even started the expansion pack. It's just been sitting on my shelf as I got distracted by other games. Now I'm trying to plow through some RPGs, thanks to the economy not leaving me any money to buy anything anymore.
I've been enjoying Drakensang a great deal, but then you just hit this wall where enemies take a frustrating amount of time to kill and unleash constant status effects on your entire party. That rat quest was bullshit and I gave up on it for the time being, and now I'm trying to continue with the story (finished the errand quest for the dock merchant; he tells me to come back later) but these amoebas are stopping my progress. My kick ass pirate barely hurts them. God damn this game!

Would Rise of teh argonauts be considered action RPG...i've heard mixed things but you could take a look at it.
Actually this just caught my eye.
I like the sound of no-hud and having the Argonaut be your base HQ.
My friend has gothic 3 on his laptop and he's coming by to show it to me. Ill get a good feel for it that way. I really like the sound of it. Men vs Orcs in an epic sandboxish adventure.
I really want an action rpg that blends all this stuff with very refined combat. Something like a cross between Rune and Dark messiah vrs baulders gate with less wall of text.
I dont know why i beat Drakensang- i didnt find it to be that good. There is a guide here in G&T that really helped me refine my stats to not be gimped.

Yeah, I posted that guide. :P
It's a decent guide on what's worth spending points on, but I've still hit a bit of a wall with these enemies. I don't particularly enjoy spending several minutes to kill a single monster that's not a boss. Is there some way I can easy cut down these amoebas?
And Gothic is a good series, though refined is not how I'd describe the combat. It's still a big world with lots to do and you can choose to align yourself with multiple factions, capturing cities from your enemies. I enjoyed taking back human cities from the Orcs. I never did finish that game, though. That's another I'll have to re-install.
Edit: Fucking fuck, fuck this! I just got surrounded by six amoebas. I'm tempted to uninstall this game.

Im running XP 64 here with regular XP on another drive.
Dashui: I found a guide somewhere that helped me get through many parts of the game. There were a few parts that I skipped altogether- (in terms of side quests).
Ill have to hunt it down. It was in German though.

MASS EFFECT, your wizardy is Biotics, and shoot 'em up 3rd person camera.
Also, thank the thread for reminding me I need to play the Witcher on my new PC.
oh dear fuck I just realized something super important. so important that the world is getting smaller and im getting tunnel vision.
which one do I start with G&T?
Im thinking of starting with Messiah to get the actiony action going right away.
Then either Gothic or Witcher with ME inbetween / for breaks from the other.

And he shouldn't stray off the main story, honestly. It's not worth it.
Anyone played Gorky 17? It doesn't seem to be that action based, but it caught my eye on GOG, and I remember reading about it like 10 years ago. I've never heard anyone mention it since then.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
It might not be what you are looking for, but Guild Wars, especially Nightfall, can be played as a single player RPG, and has some pretty fast-paced combat.
Posts
edit: fixed double post.
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (2017, colorized)
I lost two keyboards and mice to NoX.
And not because it requires clicking and key pushing.
God that game pissed me off.
Ultima Underworld I and II are very old, but the best things ever. Arx Fatalis has been compared to them, but I couldn't get into it for some reason.
Also, the Gothic games, as mentioned.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic? The Force Unleashed? Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines?

I went into this thread thinking it was going to be about German RPGs.
And... well... I guess it sort of is.

This is just one of what will be many.
Gothic also a maybe. I remember hearing combat in Gothic was borked in a weird way?
Never heard of NoX so Ill check that out.
Thanks for the tips!
Those are Action RPGs :P
Although Oblivion's combat does boil down to clicky-click-click.
Ooo how about Mount & Blade?
Light RPG element. Fun as heck mounted combat! :winky:
Now that I think about it. Forget everything I just mentioned and get Deus Ex and pick the GEP gun.

Yes, the Gothic games are great, if a bit dated, and you can find the first two on gog.com.
The Witcher has also been mentioned and I must also recommend it, it's a fantastic game.
I now own and must play:
Gothic 3
Dark Massiah
The Witcher
Mass Effect (<-- totally forgot about this game and how much I wanted to play it)
which one do I start with G&T?
however the other 3 are all fantasy so maybe you'll want to save ME for when you get sick of dragons
Then either Gothic or Witcher with ME inbetween / for breaks from the other.
You're a terrible liar. Ok, if he sticks only to the main story, it's short.
IIRC I finished most of the content and it wasn't more than 30 hours
