Laptop cooling (summer's coming...)

matricsmatrics Registered User regular
Right, so based on last year's experience, I expect this summer to be pretty hot (35-40 deg C, so 95-105-ish F), and my poor laptop (Latitude D830) gets pretty hot (as in: I think I can fry eggs on it if I flip it over).

So I've been looking at getting myself a Zalman ZM-NC1000, which seems to be the best bang for the buck.

Anyone ever used an NC1000 and/or any other cooling pad that might be better given the above-mentioned temperature conditions?

Have you opened up your laptop to clean the fans et all? Lifting the laptop a bit with a shim will also help.

We have a lot of the D820 and D830's where I work, and in my experience they just feel like they run a little warmer. Our failure rate on them is still at 0% though, so as long as you're not working with it on a bed, or taping the vents shut, it'll be fine.

During the summer my 820 can get hot enough when the CPU is pinned to 100% that I can't touch the bottom of the case under the processor, but it's 2.5 years old now and issue free.

i have the same problem with my old laptop.

one summer i used a book to wedge up the side with the fan.

the laptop burned a hole all the way through the book (about 200 pages worth)

i retrospect, i shouldnt have left it on, and gone out

learn from my mistakes everyone. :P

Hehe... for now I'm using 2 empty cigarette packs (one under each corner in the back) to hold it up, which works pretty well for now. No, I haven't cleaned the fans and air ducts, mainly because I've seen how one opens a D830... it's a pain in the ass. But there doesn't seem to be much dust collected inside anyway.

Yeah, I think I'll order the damn cooler and be done with it :B

I always point these out for laptop cooling because people forget you can fit fans in more locations than just underneath...

I've been using this guy for the past 3 years. I love that its all aluminum. Which honestly, is probably providing much more cooling that the two fans that are built in.
