We're about midway through this console generation, so I guess it's ok to start talking about how certain companies have preformed so far. Namely, this one:
The house that Sonic built has been on absolute FIRE this generation as a publisher. I've been following Sega since 1986 and the Sega Master System, and this generation has seen them rise as one of the premiere publishers. Mind you, Sega has always been a great publisher (they cleverly masked this in the Genesis days by publishing new, jointly-owned IPs with companies such as Toejam & Earl Productions Inc and most famously Treasure), but the types of publishing deals they've made this generation is unrivaled in their history. Lets take a look at what Sega has done this generation that others haven't.
Obviously, this is the banner partnership for Sega this generation. It really was an enormous coup - Sega effectively stole the brightest stars away from Capcom. And their output so far has been fantastic - MadWorld was ridiculously fun. Here's what we got coming from Platinum Games via Sega:
MadWorld
Bayonetta
Infinite Space
---
A completely overlooked publishing deal this generation has been Sega's partnership with Obsidian entertainment. While the loss of the Aliens RPG is deeply saddening, the more important project, Alpha Protocol, keeps marching on. In addition, Sega has a deal with Obsidian to publish an unannounced RPG.
Alpha Protocol
---
Controversial is how I'd describe this publishing deal, as it seems like no one would give High Voltage a chance, except for my boys in blue. Of course, we all know whats coming from this publishing deals:
The Conduit
---
The exigence for this topic. A major publishing deal. Can you remember the last time these guys worked with anybody BESIDES Square-Enix? I can't. Sega is set to publish Tri-aces new upcoming RPG, and my oh my do the screenshots look impressive.
End of Eternity
---
Whats interesting about these publishing deals is how similar they are to the Genesis era publishing deals. Much like the cases of Toejam & Earl and all of Treasures output, Sega owns all of the IPs listed above. Make no mistake, these games are wholey owned by Sega.
In addition to ramping up their publishing profile, Sega has also given outstanding output to the playstation 3. Their interally developed PS3 output is nothing short of mindblowing:
I for one have enjoyed watching Sega this generation, and I look forward to seeing what they shock me with next.
EDIT: And, to be sure, these aren't the ONLY publishing deals Sega has been involved with, just the most high profile. Their work with Gearbox, for example, is very promising.
EDIT AGAIN: And for old times sake:
SEEEEEEE-GAAAAAA

You might say I am awaiting it with infinite anticipation.

Spoiler'd for HScroll.
It's worth noting that the director for EoF is the same director as Valkyrie Profile 2. He was also the planner for Final Fantasy Tactics.
Bought so fucking hard with this revelation.
The more I see Bayonetta, the more I want to play it. I realize it's utter ridiculousness, but it might be fun.
Also, not enough mention of SEGA's best selling game this generation, as in, you didn't mention it at all.
Really though, the only thing I want out of Sega is a Valkyria chronicles 2.
Well, and Initial D is still solid, but it's not like they plan on releasing the console/portable versions here(which is a grand show of stupidity).
Publishing a Tri-Ace game is basically a waste of money. They don't do particularly well at retail and they haven't made anything good since VP2.
Also even if the publisher SEGA has the IP rights to this stuff doesn't mean they could make something as good as Mad World without Platinum Games.
Sega really fucked up Sonic and the Black Knight, doubly depressing considering the baby steps they made with Secret Rings.
Sega has made BETTER games than MadWorld this generation. Namely Yakuza 3.
MadWorld is so fucking good.
Haven't played it yet, so I can't say anything about it. Yakuza the original was pretty good though.
Also VC isn't that good, but saying it around here is tantamount to suicide.
And I'll also add my name to the "madworld was incredible" brigade.
I do wish their internal output was as up to scratch. Sonic and the Black Knight was incredibly bad, first game in years I've returned within a week. It hurt too, because early signs were that it might work excellently, and it ended up being worse than unleashed
So excited
I've imported it and I've been going through it, extremely slowly, using a japanese-english dictionary. I'm 4th year japanese, and I know enough to play the game. Thus far, it's been a blast. Excellent game.
Early signs show that it's a JRPG that plays similarly to parasite eve, being directed by the planner for Final Fantasy Tactics and the director of VP2.
I've never played them before.
It's my all-time favorite RPG battle system. It was a mix of real time and turn based. Almost SRPG like. Look it up on youtube.
The sequel just made it into straight survival horror.
The first one's still really good to this day.
Now just published, but developed. Sega owns The Creative Assembly. Empire: Total War was internally developed.
First off, to get the hate out of the way: As it should be well-known, I hate Sonic. I think it's both a poor concept and poorly executed. I hate the mascot itself, which is about as Generic Late '80s/Early '90s "Attitude" as you can get, and it's been a sick pleasure of mine to watch the franchise crash and burn over the last decade or so.
Now to switch it back to the love: Sega has seen such a huge turnaround in my eyes this generation.
- They continue to do well (in terms of quality if not sales) with Virtua Fighter. Virtua Fighter 5 remains my favorite fighter this generation, just as VF4 Evo did in the previous one. Sega-developed and published.
- Valkyria Chronicles was the best damn game of 2008. Sega-developed and published.
- While I didn't enjoy MadWorld (a bit too repetitive for me), I still agree with the whole Platinum Games acquisition. Bayonetta looks pretty damn fun and I'm hoping it performs well.
- Heard nothing but praise for Yakuza, and it looks really damn solid. Sadly, I never got to play 1 or 2, so even if 3 came out here I wouldn't pick it up for story purposes. Sega-developed and published.
- Alpha Protocol is a day-one purchase for me and looks amazingly solid. Teaming up with Obsidian is a good thing.
- Between MadWorld and the upcoming The Conduit, they're a third-party publisher that's actually trying to get a foothold on more (sorry) "hardcore" games on the Wii, which is something I can fully get behind.
- Condemned and Condemned 2? Good games.
- An unknown Silicon Knights project they're working with. Despite Too Human, Eternal Darkness was good enough that I still have faith.
- Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is the best gaming deal since The Orange Box. I grew up an SNES kid, and never realized just how many solid Genesis games I was missing. Seriously guys, if you haven't picked it up yet, do so. Over 40 games for $30, and at least half are really good.
I've heard it is "crazy violent"
Like as in "way more violent than MadWorld".
The battles aren't random, nor do you shoot in real time. It's ATB based, and when you do fire your weapons, time freezes and you get a Final Fantsy-esq battle menu, and an SRPG-like attack range.
But it's still sort of real time in that you move around any time you're not selecting an attack, and you can dodge enemy attacks.
And it's similar to Parasite Eve, you say?
Speculation at this point. The battle system hasn't been shown in motion nor described in detail, but screenshots of it certainly look a lot like Parasite eve, and we know you'll be able to move around.
Vagrant Story has a similar battle system. But I think more people played Parasite Eve than Vagrant Story, so it doesn't do much good to mention it.
Speaking of Vagrant Story, the director of EoE was the director of Vagrant Story as well. The dude has been pretty solid in his career. The only VP he directed (VP2) is easily the best in the series.
The voices and the cutscenes made me what to gag myself.
