Just picked this game up and it's pretty fun. Once I get used to the controls I'll probably switch it to hard. The movement is incredibly touchy though for my tastes. For the first boss of Momohime's campaign I ran into the fire more than once due to moving too far. I had to just barely tap it to not run into damage. Game is so pretty though. If only my stupid widescreen TV would let the Wii fill it out in widescreen mode, but nooooo the Wii has to not recognize that the TV is always in widescreen. There is no setting for me to switch you dumb system!
This may be a stupid question, but do you have your Wii set to widescreen in the system options?
Yeah, all it does is scrunch up the screen into the 4:3 window :?. I've tried everything, including calling the TV manufacturer and Nintendo. It just won't happen. The TV won't recognize the Wii is set to widescreen, and the Wii won't recognize the TV is always widescreen and I can't change any settings. Thankfully the 360 and PS3 fill up the whole screen to make up for the Wii's incompetence.
The TV does not recognize if the Wii is set to widescreen or not as it can't; they're both 480p signals
The Wii does not recognize the TV is widescreen or not because it has no way of getting that information at all
You have to set the Wii to widescreen in the options and set your TV to widescreen, is your TV not allowing this?
Correct, because mine is just always widescreen, but in a way that the Wii won't recognize it. You know how sometimes TV's have options like Normal, Stretch, or Widescreen? That's what the Wii wants me to use. Well mine doesn't have those options. It has some weird stretch and fill options which only helps for things that are in the widescreen rectangle, like cutscenes in other games. The Wii is the whole 4:3 square though. I can't do anything with it. It's a weird TV.
The new issue of Play magazine has a Muramasa cover. I didn't read it (I've actually never read Play, and in any case I'm consciously avoiding trailers/previews), but it's nice to see the game get a bit of exposure.
I didn't see it discussed here, so this is the cover you mentioned:

I'll be adding this to my Christmas list, along with Fallout 3: GOTY edition, and beef jerky. I am already too far behind in my backlog, and I think it will be December before I get enough time with Arkham Asylum to move on to something else.

Interesting choice of words, given the cover. :?
WHAT. Finally, something dirtier than their Magna Carta cover.
The best part is they show the source. It seems tentacle rape goes back a longer way than I thought.
Gone through about 6 chapters of each story in Shura. For some reason Momohime's level is like 20 higher than Kisuke's... must be those Lairs I kept failing at (you keep the XP when you die)? I know I've cleared like three with her but only one with him (which was a boss and not a swarm). It's pretty sad when I earn a new sword from beating a boss and then never use it because I immediately forge three more that are better. :P
I love that this has Classic Controller support. When a game has up = jump I like a D-pad for my movement. Plus it's 2D; an analog stick seems unnecessary.
I've had the enemies offscreen problem, playing in 4:3. Not a big deal, really.

So I'm at Act 5, and I noticed a flaw in the translation.
Thanks to SMT lore, mostly.
The boss is called a Chimera, and I'm pretty sure it's a Nue.
A legendary monster in Japanese mythology. Nue has the head of a monkey, the arms and legs of a tiger and the tail of a snake.
According to The Tale of the Heike, Emperor Konoe, the Emperor of Japan, became sick after having terrible nightmares every night, and a dark cloud appeared at two o'clock in the morning on roof of the palace in Kyoto during the summer of 1153. The story says that the samurai Minamoto no Yorimasa staked-out the roof one night and fired an arrow into the cloud, out of which fell a dead nue. Yorimasu then supposedly sank the body in the Sea of Japan.
In a local expansion of the story, the nue's corpse floated into a certain bay, and the locals, fearing a curse, buried it. A mound which exists today is supposed to be this grave.
The boss has the head of a monkey, the arms of a tiger, and the tail of a snake.
All I know is that thing was a bitch to fight until I figured out his pattern; I had burned up a ton of my healing items in a lair. Still not as hard as Momo's Chapter III boss, though.
Played past the first boss with Momohime on Shura.
Killed a couple of times by samurai, but I think I got things together enough. Only got hit once by the boss. Figured out how to use special attacks for movement and stuff! Still don't really know how any of the gauges work!
I already like the combat way, way more than Odin Sphere's. Hopefully there's some more stuff in store to keep it fresh, but even if there isn't that much, it's definitely enough to be decently entertaining.
I need this game. Hoping it'll be readily available in Canada tomorrow, as I'd love to pick it up after class.
Originally, the combat seemed to be a bit shallow, but I've watched some more videos and when you forge more swords your move set seems like it starts to get more varied.

"Chimera" can also be used to refer to any fantastic creature that is a mishmash of two or more real animals. A nue is definitely a chimera, even if it isn't the Chimera.
I almost killed it on my last try. Bear in mind I'm playing on Shura.
I am too. I seriously thought about shifting down to Musa(?) after Momo's Chapter 3 boss kept kicking my ass, but instead I started Kisuke's story and learned that the Equipment menu is how you actually use the masks, belts, and whatnot. I went back to Momo and gave her a strength-boosting item that seemed to make the difference (plus I was more comfortable with the controls).
I love the boss fights.
Kisuke's Chapter 2 boss was incredible, and I think my favorite for Momohime is the Chapter 6 boss I just beat yesterday, dethroning her Chapter 3.
You actually can clear the lairs? O_o I usually back out by the second wave.
Yeah, I've cleared the Monks, the Toads, and the Ninjas with Momohime (like I said, this is probably why she's 10 levels higher than Kisuke on the equivalent chapter); Kisuke has cleared the Toads and the God of Pestilence (who is stupid easy if you have the item that prevents you from being poisoned). Fuck those frogs, by the way; they recommend being level 23 for them I think but it's a damned chore even at ten levels above that.
Sadly, other than the massive XP farming the rewards have not been worth the effort. The item I got from beating the 100 Monks is the only one even remotely worth the effort (10% reduction to damage received), since the food is too damn expensive to rely on the Mad Tummy 2 item I got from one of the other ones.

I've got a recipe now thats good for temporary invincibility that can last 2 or 3 waves depending on how fast you can clear them. I've only got 2 dungeons I havent cleared, the two most ridiculous ones.
For enemies that dont go down easy, the combo I turn to is something like this:
slash x3, repeat until they take air -> uppercut slash -> dash air slash x3 -> air slash x4 (which brings you both down to the ground), ground slash (which should relaunch them if you do it quick enough) -> start chain over from uppercut. Dashing air slashes are optional, sometimes depending on the height they are at they dont work out.
You wont be able to relaunch them after the 2nd time. After the 2nd time, that spinning slash that you do by holding down and slash and letting go should launch them if you wait till they get up all the way and will take every hit.
I actually think it is possible to get 3 regular air slashes BETWEEN each dashing air slashes, under certain circumstances, which would be quite ridiculous.
This game is sounding more and more awesome. Picking it up in a couple of hours, can't wait!
Is there a consensus on which difficulty to start on? Should I worry about this too much?
Start on the harder difficulty unless you have no experience with 2D beat-em-ups; you can always downshift later if you find it too much. There's absolutely no penalty for dying that I can see.

is there some trick to using long blades i'm missing or are they just absolute shit? i'm actually finding shura mode fairly easy (almost done act 3 i think, level 20 as kisuke) *as long as i only use blades* the second i switch from blade to long blade i go from being able to go through almost any number of random battles without getting hit to dying horribly the first one i run into. They're so bloody slow i either get raped by projectiles from all directions and can't attack fast enough to deflect, or while i'm doing a slow ponderous swing in one direction 5 guys pile on me from behind
Well I'm in act 4 now as Momohime and I still love it. Taliosfalcon, I haven't really had that much trouble with long blades. The only suggestion I can offer is to try using block more often, and to focus on crowd control so that you don't get hit from behind. The long blades are not terribly effective for deflecting.

Finished Momohime's campaign, roughly 11 hours.
My favorite boss fight was probably
Yukinojyo, though Ippondatara was a close second. I demolished Chimera once I figured out how to stop those stupid spins.
Final boss was fairly easy. Repetitive, but easy.
"Shigurui" has been unlocked as a new playing style.

I've been playing this game for the past week, and it's pretty awesome so far, both graphics and combo wise! One thing though, how much harder is Shura compared to Muso? I've played plenty of beat em ups before, but the game made Shura sound super hard, so I've been playing on Muso for now, and I'm thinking of doing one playthrough for each difficulty for both characters. I'm on about act 6 for Momohime and have yet to start Kisuke's story, but I'm gonna do that soon. This game rocks! 8-)

On Shura, the enemies do a lot more damage. Like 200-600 a hit. You pretty much have to dodge to stay alive.
What's scary is I think I just unlocked something even worse by clearing it on Shura.
So what is the quantifiable difference between Muso and Shura? It seems like Muso auto-parries for you, but that might well be me just being a total spaz.

Except Chapter 3. That fight was epic.
