So what is the quantifiable difference between Muso and Shura? It seems like Muso auto-parries for you, but that might well be me just being a total spaz.
The manual says something about leveling up being more important/relevant in Muso, but I haven't tried so I couldn't say.
is there some trick to using long blades i'm missing or are they just absolute shit? i'm actually finding shura mode fairly easy (almost done act 3 i think, level 20 as kisuke) *as long as i only use blades* the second i switch from blade to long blade i go from being able to go through almost any number of random battles without getting hit to dying horribly the first one i run into. They're so bloody slow i either get raped by projectiles from all directions and can't attack fast enough to deflect, or while i'm doing a slow ponderous swing in one direction 5 guys pile on me from behind
I'm not sure how it's different for the guy, but for Momohime...
I thought they were fairly useful for crowd control at times. There's one random fight that is like ten little blue and yellow imp things. With a long blade I can just do two three-hit comboes to each side and everything's dead.
They're also pretty easy to use in the air. If you launch something, you can just repeat the full air combo over and over again. After you're finished, you'll fall a little bit, but whatever enemies you hit will fall at the same rate. From a single full launch/jump, you can probably repeat that four times, at least, even before resetting with more launches or dashing slashes. And it seemed that you didn't even have to launch things to get them caught up in it.
I basically just used my strongest long blade for the monk lair. I was more often than not slashing up five guys at a time.
"Shigurui" has been unlocked as a new playing style.
Yeah... I read about that somewhere (I think NP's review). I'm not that hardcore, so I'm just going to ignore it when I get it.
It wasn't selectable when I started Kisuke's campaign, but yes, it's worse than Shura.
Maybe it's only for a second run?
I didn't see it mentioned but Shigurui is basically one hit one kill. In the Play interview Kamitani said it's beatable because it's based on the Muso mode so you still automatically block. They said the key to beating it (which has been done) it switching between your swords because there are a few frames of animation where you are untouchable. Sounds like a fun challenge to me I haven't finished Shura though. Hopefully they have a special ending after you complete it I can't imagine it being something you can complete very fast.
If nothing else it would save you a ton of money on healing items. Not sure what else you'd spend it on (smoke bombs and lots of them? Sword stones?), and you'd probably still need food to gain spirit (unless all of your swords are retained) but hey.
I finally got my review copy in the mail yesterday, and it's everything I hoped it would be. I'm on Act 3 now, playing Momohime of course, and it hasn't actually been hard playing on the hard difficulty. I died on the Act 2 boss the first time, but only because I hadn't bothered to forge a new sword since my last level up and my other ones were breaking. Does it get harder?

Sure the story doesn't make the most sense so far, and I'm playing on the easiest difficulty, but it's gorgeous and entertaining for a beat'em up.
That fox lady is kind of a bitch though. When speaking to her during ch.4 (iirc) at a save point she talks about how she wants to send her mystical foxes to tear up Momohime's soul just for the fun of it.

The story seems to throw you into it at a halfway point, and expect you to fill in the blanks along the way.
My one complaint with this game is that the character movement is too twitchy. It's hard to simply turn around and hit something directly behind you without dashing past it.

I just completed Kisuke's Chapter 7 last night; that boss went down surprisingly easy (on my second try; he sucker-punched me with his lightning lunge the first time) for what it was.
Hell... the hardest boss I've fought with him was his first one (seriously... fuck that guy) until I decided to stop slashing randomly and pay attention to what he was doing with that shuriken.
Momo's had two hard bosses thus far (and I think her first one was harder for me than it should have been; chalking that one up to inexperience with the game); will hit her chapter 7 tonight.
I've been playing Momohime's campaign for about an hour and a half each night for the past couple days. I wish I could spend more time with it, because it's so good, and I find myself getting so much better with the controls. I really feel like a badass with how quickly I can dispatch enemies; it just feels great.
I'm considering bumping it up to Shura now since I'm a lot more comfortable with the moves.

Just got this. It is freaking awesome. And good grief, who needs higher resolutions? This is crisp, colorful, stylish, and gorgeous.
Shura is also the way to go if you've ever played an action game before.
Edit: just ran into what I think are the "frogs' that have been mentioned. Those are kappa, and they have turtle shells so I'm not sure how they're being mistaken for frogs.
Editmore: I've just discovered my first restaurant in this. That is so cruel. Now I want to go out to eat

There are actual frogs. I think the game calls them Toads. Some of them are rather large, and they can be kind of a pain because they're rather resilient.

I ran into a frog battle once! I have never beaten a frog battle.
Finished both stories last night (~22 hours total; 12 for Momohime and 10 for Kisuke), then forged a crazy number of swords that I'm never going to use. While both final boss fights were great (both beaten on my second attempt), I give the edge to Momo's since Kisuke's didn't hurt me enough to burn my "Auto Restore" safety net -- although maybe I just had more healing items for him (<3 peaches), I dunno. However, I liked Kisuke's ending better than Momo's, but that's probably a factor of Momo's character being really bland and her story actually being driven by Jinkuro.
Found an epic lair with Kisuke, having to fight three Blue Monks (simultaneously!) and then a God of Pestilence. Cleared it on my first try (since the GoP is a joke), and my reward was some sadistic item that increases encounters.
Momohime eventually cleared the Seven Samurai lair, which was horrific; I was over 20 levels higher than recommended and they still crushed me repeatedly.
One-hit-kill mode is not available on your old save, but it is an option when starting a new file. I'll pass, thanks. But I will definitely go back and poke around everywhere and see what's behind the white barriers (being able to warp will be a great help).

I'm still trying to figure out the battle with that ditz priestess. She seems to have two rather ridiculous unavoidable attacks, and I'm no sure what to do about that crap. Best I've managed is a double KO.

Also Tengu and Bomb/Kisari-gama ninjas suck.
I think the key to fighting her is to keep her prayer scrolls off the screen; they can be attacked and usually go away fairly quickly.
Tengu I don't mind, but I burned a LOT of Smoke Bombs avoiding those damned ninjas (to the point where Kisuke didn't have any Smokes left for his final act).

Okay, now that I've properly remembered how to do the air-dash/slashes and that secret arts are not to be used sparingly, I'm slaughtering things properly again.
Man, the restaurants in this game make me hungry. I also thought of Odin Sphere's food and now I've made "egg toast" for real
oh jesus yes, vanillaware fucking loves their food porn
The food might be what I'm most impressed with in the whole game. It might be nice to be able to skip it from time to time, but overall it's a really charming little touch.
Like a week ago I was reading an old Game Informer that had a preview of this, but I had no idea when it was coming out. Then I saw this thread like 5 minutes later, so I went and grabbed a copy at Fry's (on sale for $40!) yesterday.
Holy. Fucking. Shit. This is awesome. I just wish I had more time to devote to it.

It's weird but true. It's a neat touch and I derive some weird sort of joy out of preparing rice balls for my journey.

I wish you could prepare more of the meals for battle. Maybe limit the amount you can carry to balance that out.

Put some more time in last night, felt adventurous and bumped up to Shura. This mode actually makes the combat shine, and I think I'll continue playing this way. Got my ass handed to me a few times which really forced me to pay attention to everything on the screen and not just slash wildly. It's pretty rewarding.
Also hit my first hot spring. I like how Jinkuro verbally eviscerates Momohime before she goes in. God what a jackass.

Kisuke plays exactly the same as Momohime. Shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
And story went straight from incomprehensible to snoozetown.
Everything beyond = all goes to hell in a handbasket.
