I managed to get a really good bargain on a trip to a lodge in KwaZulu-Natal but am having trouble finding cheap plane tickets. I managed to get lucky and find tickets to europe for 500 round trip, so I assume there might be something out there like that for South Africa, but I'm finding nothing but 1400+ round trip prices. Anyone have any tips or recommendations on how to get there on the cheap?

I'm seeing some for around $1300 RT from Providence, but flying to South Africa is expensive in general due to the distances involved (around 8000 miles each way).

Man that really sucks. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and pay.
See if connecting inside Africa works out cheaper. Travelling to Rwanda for me worked out a hell of a lot cheaper going Glasgow -> Schiphol -> Nairobi -> Kigali than going Glasgow -> Brussels -> Kigali.
They're both KLM routes, but KLM codeshares with Kenya Airways, and for whatever reason the Kenya Airways leg (Schiphol -> Nairobi -> Kigali) is a hell of a lot cheaper than the KLM-operated leg (Brussels -> Kigali), although it's longer and covers more distance.
Basically see what the cheapest flight you can get to any major African Airport is (probably Nairobi or Addis Ababa) is, then figure out the cost of the connection on an African carrier.

My fiance is from South Africa... there is no such thing as a cheap plane ticket to or from there when it involves America.
Try to get a bunch of stops, that'll bring down the cost a little. Just don't schedule the flights too tightly as my fiance has always had delays on that trip.
