Recommend: JRPGs

Okay, so I never really liked JRPG's. Valkyria Chronicles and Crisis Core changed my mind. I'm looking for some JRPG's that have the same kind of combat systems. I don't like turn based, Valkyria Chronicles got through because the combat feels real time. The only platforms I currently have access to are PSP/PS3, and I already have my eye on Eternal Sonata (the combat system looks much like Valkyria Chronicles, which I can tolerate).

So, any suggestions?

Is your PS3 backwards compatible? Because the PS2 is the king of JRPGs.

No, it's not backwards compatible, but I do have a PS2 plugged in - I don't really use it since it looks like ass on my TV. I'd prefer PSP, because I get more gaming time away from home than I do at home.

I can't recommend this game enough. It's beautiful and fun and is chock full of Japanese mythology (which I find refreshing since so many other games are hung up on Norse or Greek mythology)

But Okami isn't an RPG, it's an action/adventure game. Hell, the gameplay is an exact clone of the 3D Zelda games. However, you still ought to buy the game because if for no other reason it's fucking beautiful and I wish I could stomach the gameplay enough to see more of it.

There are many crazy bastards out there who consider Zelda to be an rpg.

I just beat Eternal Sonata, and I don't know if I would recommend it. The cut-scenes are slow, and very anti-dramatic. The gameplay and battle system is really well done, and you can blow through the game in around 24 hours if you don't care about achievements and doing the optional dungeon at the end. It's a good game, if you don't get it at full price.

He said no turn based, so don't recommend the SMT stuff. Shadow Hearts 2 and Disgaea are also turn based. With that said, Tales of Eternia is a solid PSP RPG. Star Ocean 1/2 are on the PSP as well. Those feature real time combat systems.

The combat system is very interesting, so I don't mind the turn based aspect.

Thanks guys, a lot of suggestions already. I'll check some of these out.

I might have access to one soon, but I'm not personally buying myself a DS. The PSP does what I want a handheld to do, so it's enough for me. I'm just looking for games on the systems I already own.

Going to hijack this thread to ask my own JRPG question: It takes a lot (in non-grating storytelling and non-repetitive gameplay) to make a JRPG palatable to me... how am I going to feel about Tales of Vesperia, if I get it? I'm resigned to the fact that it's going to look like anime, and I think I can put up with that.

Tales games all have pretty intense gameplay. The stories seem to range from mediocre to okay, but Abyss' and Vesperia's are supposed to be really good.

And there is an SMT that compares to Crisis Core: Devil Summoner(PS2's, Raidou Kuzunoha VS The Soulless Army). The sequel comes out in a month.

I'll put in my vote for Tales of Symphonia, which I believe was released for PS2 (I played it on Gamecube.)

It ranks among my favorite RPGs, mainly for having an excellent combat system to offset the slightly-above-average story. Some of the voice acting is kind of embarrasing though.

EDIT: And the guy who does Kratos is the narrator in one of those house-flipping shows my parents watch, so when I'm at home and they're watching it I can't help but wonder why he's talking about bathrooms and kitchens rather than Desians and exspheres.

EDIT2: Sorry, disregard this. Totally my bad.

Only in Japan, which is annoying, because after reading about it I want to play it.

Somewhat of a Non-sequitur, but does anyone know which JRPG actually had the longest overall gameplay length? Not as in (I had to spend three weeks getting to level 150 to fight the boss!) but as in having to sit through that many cut-scenes, or just a very very long story that physically would take forever to play even without random battles and with boss battles being instantly winnable?

The Penny Arcade games. I started playing the first one tonight. Combat is pretty fast paced. You'll probably like it.
