video card/motherboard troubles

JavenJaven Registered User regular
Today I received an ATI Radeon HD 4870 as a gift, a formidable upgrade from my 8800 GTS. Unfortunately after multiple attempts at installing the drivers (both from the included disc and the support site) they don't seem to want to be recognized. I think it might be a mobo issue, as I'm currently running an MSI P60i, which is an Nvidia chipset I believe. Is there a way to work this without buying a new motherboard?

    So uhh, update I guess?

    I keep getting a windows code 39, which means the driver is either missing or corrupted. I've tried installing several versions from the amd website and always get the same result. When installation finishes and I check the log it says everything has been installed successfully but sure enough when I reboot I get a prompt telling me I don't have any ATI graphics drivers and I should download the one appropriate for my hardware. I really have no idea what to do here.

    Kind of a hassle, but I'd give a shot at trying a linux boot-CD and see if the 4870 works properly in there. If it doesn't, I'm going to guess it's a motherboard incompatibility, though for the record I often stick ATI cards in nVidia chipset mobos without issue.

    edit: might be worth doing a ubuntu install-within-windows since it'll be a genuine install on which you can test fully fledged drivers.

    Have you tried Driver Sweeper or a similar utility? Sometimes the official uninstallers leave remnants in the registry, and that causes problems when switching from nVidia to ATI.

    I've tried both driver sweeper and driver cleaner pro multiple times to no avail.

    From Googling around:
    If the display driver fails to load, and reports a Code 39 error after installation,

    the following steps to disable Driver Signature Enforcement and install the
    play driver

    For Dual Boot Systems

    * Boot system
    * Press F8 at the Boot Options Menu
    * Choose Disable Driver Signature Enforcement in the Advanced Boot
    * Options menu
    * Press Enter

    For Single Boot Systems

    * After the system BIOS screen, press F8
    * Choose Disable Driver Signature Enforcement in the Advanced Boot
    * Options menu

    Press Enter
