ohjesusgod - My farts, they are legion!

As you may have already surmised I have a bit of a gas problem.

I'd say I'm pretty normal in terms of diet and exercise - I go to the gym about 5 days a week, I eat fruits and veggies but not as much as I probably should. I like whole wheat bread, but I'm not a huge fiber-fiend.

The issue is this: whenever I exert myself to at least a medium degree physically, like if I'm helping a friend move or doing cardio at the gym, it seems like I pass gas quite a bit more than I usually do at rest; sometimes to an embarrassing degree. It's not constant, and they aren't particularly smelly or anything - I've never had anyone come up to me and go "WTF do you eat?!," but it seems like I'm almost always noticing that I need to fart, little ones, big ones and all in between. Basically, If I get myself worked up to the point that I start sweating, you can be reasonably sure I'll probably start needing to fart too.

I've taken precautions such as making sure to use the bathroom as thoroughly as I can before I begin working out, but it still seems to always pop up - especially if I'm running on a treadmill, I suppose the bouncing stirs things up more than usual? I usually stick to ellipticals for that very reason, but I'd love to do some running without having to worry that I'm smelling up the place.

To people who say "gyms suck anyway, go run outside you can fart as much as you want," I like the gym - I don't have to worry if it's cold or rainy out, I can lift, get sweaty and go home. Easy, in and out.

Thanks for any insights!

Exercise speeds up the digestive process because your body wants you to get more nutrients in. Also lifting and any type of weight puts stress on your abdomen and your muscles.
Anxiety also causes excess gas as well.

I get gas from both of these so I dunno what to tell you. Try taking some medication for gas. I wouldn't suggest charcoal tablets but people have tried them.
Also excess gas can be caused by a food intolerance such as gluten, or lactose. So if it really is bothering you, I'd experiment with cutting certain foods from your diet for an entire week and see what happens.

Eating yogurt will help alleviate gas, but do you notice any less when you don't eat certain foods?

Also, carbonated drinks will give you gas.

If you drink a lot of milk it is bound to happen. The best you can do is either cut down on that kind of lactose or just pass gas where it is "safe". Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

I know a pretty healthy guy that gets gas from everything. The fucker can eat half of a grape and he'll be playing the butt trumpet 10 minutes later.

It's not really advice, but some people seem to naturally be gassier than others.

Do you use probiotics and/or drink a lot of protein shakes?

Goodness! This thread is not safe for me to read at work. I keep getting uncontrollable laughter and enjoyment from it because I can be such a child.

Anyway, I sort of have a similar problem as the OP as it seems I almost always have an abundance of gas. One thing I found that helps is if I slow down when I'm eating and chew my food longer and if I eat on a regular schedule, you know, eat your meals at the same time every day. That kind of thing.

I always thought that digestion was slowed down because of exercise because the blood that is used in digestion gets moved to working muscles.

Foods that make you gassy can affect your system for up to 24 hours, so it could what you ate the night previous (I know I'm not the only guy who likes to grab up on that late night Taco Bell).

Also if there was an award for best thread title you sir would win 8-).

I guess I'll give yogurt a shot - I like it but don't eat it with regularity.

I do drink a good amount of carbonated drinks - diet coke and such, but I'm not sure if I drink more than the average American. Probably more than the health-nut types who usually go to the gym though.

I'll cut down and see if it improves.

Maybe I should count my farts and correlate them in relation to my heart-rate and see if I can determine changes on a day to day basis - perhaps I can isolate whatever dietary behaviors are contributing to this condition, if there are any.

I used to take protein all the time - I know that could have given me gas.

As I'm at a stage where I'm trying to lose body fat, I'm cutting down my caloric intake some, so I'm not taking protein as a supplement anymore, just what I get with my diet.

And again, I don't eat yogurt on a daily basis, so no probiotics.

Well, when I say I fart a lot, I don't mean to say that I feel particularly gassy. I've been uncomfortable with gas before, but that was when I was a kid. I never feel uncomfortable when I go to work out - I usually feel ready to go do something.

I don't know - these aren't giant stinky farts or anything, they're more like tiny microfarts.

note: From now on, I'm just going to say "fart" instead of passing gas - it's shorter and I think we've moved past the novelty of the term.

    fart.
