Hey, it's been a long time since I posted here but hopefully you guys will be able to help me out :)

Many years ago in high school, my English 11 teacher read a short story to our class. It fascinated me at the time but I've completely forgotten the name of it and I would like to read it again.

It reminds of "The Lottery" in the sense that it conveys a sense of normality and lack of conflict throughout the entirety of it, only to conclude in some sort of shocking and almost surreal revelation for the reader. In summary, it went like this: A family is driving around in their car in the countryside on a road trip, possibly on their way to a picnic: mother, father, children (one son and one daughter, I think), and their grandmother. They're lost, and gradually their frustration leads to bickering. The whole family has a trivial, petty argument. The father drives up a small hill to a clearing overlooking the fields and lowlands, which backs onto a dense wood. They get out of the car for some air and to find their bearings. Half a dozen men then slip out of the woods, knock the entire family unconscious, hog-tie them and carry them back into the woods. And that's how it ends.

Anyone recognize it?

Yeah, a minute after I posted that, I idly googled "family stolen by men in woods short story" and look what was the first result...man, I've spent forever trying to find out what it was.

Well, I remembered some parts wrongly but solved nonetheless.

    Thanks a lot.

By your first sentence I guessed that as well.

God do I love that story and the misfit character.

Overall O'Flannery is a great writer overall, so if you liked that story, make sure to read the others she has.
