Organic Chemistry Help: Isoprene Units

So I understand that terpenes are composed of isoprene units that link together head and tail.
But how do I identify the "right" isoprene units? Do I just circle 5 carbons linked together and thats it?

Well, an isoprene is a methyl-1,3-butadiene, right? So I imagine if you were to circle an isoprene unit, you would need 4 carbons in a chain along with a methyl.

If you were to circle "5 carbons linked together", you could conceivably be incorrect if you circled a pentane-type structure. Or, perhaps, a structure with a tertiary carbon (could be wrong on that, would have to look into it).

That's my educated guess. I never dealt with terpenes in my classes.
