Thinking about getting a Gamecube

HeraldSHeraldS Registered User regular
edited April 2009 in Games and Technology
After going through RE5 with my friend I got the urge to finally play through RE4 on my PS2. Of course my PS2's laser decided now would be a good time to crap out and not read anything but PS1 games. While looking around for a new laser I realized, amazingly, that it's cheaper to buy a Gamecube and RE4 for that. I've never had a Gamecube or N64- is it worth it to pick up a Gamecube now that they're like $30 used and what games/ accessories should I get besides Resident Evil 4?

To be completely honest, unless you want to use the Gamecube player you're better off just geting a Wii.

It'll play all the GCN games flawlessly, unlike the PS3 & 360 playing their older titles, and frankly RE4:Wii Edition is the best way to play RE4.

Edit: Oh and you can actually find Component cables for the damn thing, unlike the GCN.

New Wii's are $250 or so while the Gamecube would be around $30. If I had enough for a Wii it would be the obvious choice but sadly that's not where I am. With this in mind and assuming for now that I can locate a component cable through the specialty store near me, are there enough worthwhile games for the Gamecube to warrant a purchase?

edit: Thank you Sir Platypus, you are quicker than I am.

If your PS2 isn't reading discs try this:

If it's running horizontal, try turning it vertical, then try turning it on and loading a game.

If it's running vert and not working, try turning it horizontal.

    Sometimes that works.

Is it worth it? That depends on the availability of Gamecube games (and controllers) in your area. If the answer is "yes, Gamecube games are well stocked in my local shops (or I have access to resellers)" then HECK YES the gamecube is worth it, especially at 30 dollars.

    If not, then no.

(As for accessories: controllers, and memory card(s) (pick one up that's 250+ blocks. It'll be fine). IIRC, that's all you should need. Unless you have some sort of specialized game.)

Also, Starfox Assault was pretty good. Everyone likes to shit on it, but if you just play it as something that's not a Starfox game it's a fun little arcadey shoot-em-up thing.

Tales of Symphonia hasn't been mentioned yet, and it's one of the better RPG's of last gen, if not the best for the Gamecube. As people have said, for thirty bucks, you really can't go wrong if you haven't played many of those games.

And on Rogue Squadron 2, if you've never played it, just try to remember that it was a launch title on the Gamecube. The graphics are some of the best on the system, and still impress me even today. I honestly think that it still manages to look better than some games that have come out in recent years.

As for Rogue Squadron 3, all of the flying missions were great, but they unfortunately were too few. It's worth it for the co-op remake of part 2, though, if you've got someone to play with. Funny how they include every mission from Rogue Squadron 2, but you can only play them in co-op mode.

Can you actually find those at a reasonable price now? Last time I checked they were pretty expensive.

One thing I hate about GC is the controller cable is so short compared to the Xbox and Ps2. Drove me crazy back in the day.

Wavebirds are like golddust now - Nintendo stopped making them a while ago, so only ones available are second hand or old stock from retailers. They are by far the best gamepad you can get for the GC/Wii, so if you see one cheap, snap it up.
