How do I make vista stop sucking so bad? Solved/Lock
I'm sure this thread has been done to death, but bear with me.
My girlfriend's computer has vista, and it's driving me fucking crazy.
Every program we try to start
"IT LOOKS LIKE YOU WANT TO OPEN A PROGRAM? IS THAT OKAY?"
"ARE YOU SUPER FUCKING SURE"
Every webpage we go to
"Invalid security ticket! Won't be valid until (Some FUCKING DATE YEARS AGO)"
I am tired of adding an 'exception' whenever either of us wants to use the computer in ANY WAY.
Sorry for the rant vibe, the gazebo has been angered. >8O
I feel your pain. Your best bet is to reformat completely and install Windows XP and the rest of the applications you need. The machine will be less bloated and faster.
Keep in mind you need to gather your tools first:
1. Windows XP bootable CD with latest service pack
2. CD with correct drivers for XP.
Good luck.

After turning off UAC and installing SP1, I have had absolutely no problems with Vista at all. Given the choice, I will stay with it rather than go back to XP.
Step 1: Install Windows 7
Step 2: Install Firefox
Step 3: Make sure the date and time are set correctly
If Step 1 fails, turn down/off UAC.
Basically this.
However, the Win7 Beta expires in June (/sadface). It will be released in November most likely, but until then, make sure you have all the Vista updates, and turn User Account Control off.
And yeah... never use internet explorer unless you absolutely have to. Part of my reformatting ritual is once I can access the internet, I install Mozilla Firefox.

i am so tired of this answer.
1. older technology rarely gets supported after, say now
2. 4 gig max on ram. max you'll ever need now, but you never know for the future
3. turn off UAC. it takes maybe 10 seconds and you don't have to go through the face grinding task of finding xp drivers for components that probably outdate xp
i say this in a lot of threads and am starting to sound like a windows ad but vista is awesome. i use it to great effect and it has helped me run such things as AoC and War online like butter. it got a lot of crap when it was released for not having drivers that work for it, but 2 years later almost nothing WON'T work with it.
turn off UAC, but keep the feature that double checks every time you install something. it's an extra 1/2 second when you download/install and has so far saved me from having to clear 3 different virus' from my computer
1. If you're getting user account control messages for every program you run, you're doing something wrong. You should only get them for programs that actually need administrative access to the machine.
2. If you're getting security certificate invalid errors due to dates, set your computer's clock correctly. If it's resetting the time every time you shut down the computer, replace the battery.
Is your girlfriend using her computer for something else apart of web browsing, sending and receiving e-mails?. Another option is to try Ubuntu Linux 8.10 or Xubuntu 8.10.
It is free and easy to install, if she does not like it after trying it, you could just go back to Winblows Vista.

Installing Linux on your girlfriend's PC because you don't like Vista is going to be a bad idea for 9 out of 10 girlfriends. Personally, aside from it being slower than XP, I haven't had a problem with Vista. The biggest downside for me is that some of the older EAX games will never be the same because of the way Windows handles sound now. But I'm not going to go without DirectX 10 or screw around with XP to get DX10 to work on it. And personally I would turn UAC completely off.
Scrublet is right, sorry for giving such a terrible idea about Linux.

Yeah, I get barely any UAC prompts; I jsut leave it on, since I don't want to bother using AV programs (more bloat that I don't want). I honestly get just as good performance these days, what with SP1 and all that jazz. Make sure her account is an administrator; it'll still ask before changing anything system-wide, but I only get that if I try to futz aronud with the computer in a very intimate way (like RegEdit or installing a program). For day to day use/gaming, I never see a UAC box.
There's no reason to turn UAC off. It's actually a rather nice security measure for something that should only be popping up rarely if you're doing things correctly.
Indeed, XP will be supported by Microsoft, but many companies aren't bothering to update or include drivers for new hardware. One of my monitors simply didn't have XP drivers, and my video card or my mobo either didn't have them or they were out of date.
So I should have clarified, XP will continue to be supported by MS, but the community in general is offering less and less support for XP.

I was VERY skeptical about installing Vista, but I went ahead and got it. It's way faster than XP for me, and more stable; I've needed to restart the system or had a system crash maybe 5 times in almost a year.
I feel so much more at home now with Vista than with XP. Also, a lot of people will tell you "OMG Vista uses all of ur memories!!" which might seem true at first, since it will always report very little memory as being free, but it's actually caching all the rest of your memory. It's better to have your memory doing something than just let it sit there unused.

I strongly suggest you find the windows 7 RC 7068 and install that over Vista.
I installed it a few weeks ago on my new rig and I really must say this shit is fucking tight.
Thanks for the advice fellas. This has helped a lot. I haven't turned UAC all the way off, just down.
Although, I see a new fun issue. Her computer only has 2 gigs of ram and a single core processor. :[
But, this issue has been more or less solved, so thanks everyone.

Try to run an "administrator" program. Little window pops up, click allow. That took all of what, half a second?
I like having the extra step in there.

I leave it on for my home computer, but I don't think the situation is as dire as you make it sound. Also, make sure you install SP1.
Good luck! Vista is far more stable and secure than XP. If you want it to purr along make sure you have 3GB of RAM and a dual core proc.

7077 is the current version, and the real RC release is coming in May.
