Magna Carta II [360]: out now, and way better than MC1

After a good two+ year delay, seems like Softmax are still actually doing this.

The game is running on Epic's Unreal Engine 3. The game system and setting have been entirely renewed. The story's main theme is "destiny and sacrifice." In addition to the main story line, numerous quests are available to be explored.

So far the following six characters have been revealed: Protagonist Jut who has lost his memory, the exiled queen Luzefilda, the beautiful fencer Melissa, the giant warrior Argo, chancellor Schuensaid who assassinated the former queen and Erga, an extremely violent murderer.

Not the most original story in the world, but at least it'll look good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUSlqEghuAs&feature=player_embedded

Seems like it's running on the same hardware as the PS2 Magna Carta(which really pushed the console to its limits), but maybe the final version'll look better.

Oh, and Hyung Tae Kim's still doing the art, so that's a love or hate thing right there.

calintz_1024.gif

It's typically hard to figure out what gender his characters are.

Then again, if they're female, you'll definitely know.

As for the original PS2 game, eh. It looked really good, and had a decent story, but the gameplay was a nightmare to endure.

If II improves on that, then this could turn out a lot better. And since it appears they've made this into more of a real-time game, I think it's safe to say they have.

Oh, and having finished the first a few months ago: don't bother, unless you enjoy pain.

No word on if Atlus is publishing the sequel, especially since Namco-Bandai have the rights in Japan(why is a Korean RPG so after that market?...), but that didn't keep them away from the new SRT or NIS from Ar Tonelico, so I'm optimistic. As long as this one gets a better dub than the first, at least.

Oh, and a whole bunch of pics, c/o Atlus MB:

I, for one, want more RPGs so any newly announced ones can only be seen as a good thing in my book.

The first game sounded interesting, but I heard it played like crap.

I'm interested in this, hopefully it plays like not-crap.

The first one had potential, but every single aspect of it felt like it needed to be going 150% faster. It's like the game was mired in molasses.

YES. I tried so hard to love playing the first... But I gave up. Building up your moves to do more powerful ones only to lose an entire chain from a single mistake or whatever, the unclarity in some of the early boss fights (like the one where you're supposed to run away)... running around on the field... man, how I tried to love the first.

I hope they fix those gameplay issues.

also: I hope they don't include retarded achievements in it. (hurr get all treasure chests/items/etc in the game, I'm looking at you).

Did HTK dial back the androgyny or something? I still think all his guys look like women and all his women look like women with balloons pinned to their chests.

HTK draws dudes that look like dudes pretty well.

Young dudes, however... do fall into the "pretty pretty" bunch. That or their outfits.

I forced myself to finish it just to see if it would get any better.

It finally did, in the very, very end of 70 hours of repetition, because Calintz's final style(True Fuget) kills anything in one shot.

Also, the ending/final battle was appropriately epic. It's just preceded by the most tedious RPG ever.

There were two really good pieces from the soundtrack that stood out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m60CE7o5ek

^Sounds like it came from out of Chrono Cross, it's that good.

    And the final battle music:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFOS_La5a_I&feature=related

I do love tracks with choir vocals.

Just found the cover art, and, well, I guess they know their demographic:

The best part about the first Magna Carta...the poster that came with it that I still have in my room.

That's a good description of the game. The game would have been pretty fun if it wasn't so slow. A PC port of Magna Carta that removed all the load times would probably be a good game.

    Play had the poster.

And the poster that comes with the game is double sided.

One of them is the first one in the wallpaper section here:

    http://www.atlus.com/magna_carta/

Which reminds me, how did a post-Digital Devil Saga Atlus RPG get such bad voice acting? Only Calintz's was even passable.

On a sidenote, looking at the trailer for this also gave me a glimpse at the End of Eternity trailer.

While the "lolbulletspam" annoyed me, I have to say it is looking pretty interesting. Hopefully, Tri-ace doesn't have too much say in the characters and focuses on the gameplay so the story won't be too irritating.

As for Magna Carta II, hmm...The premise seems cliche, but if they've sped things up I'll give it a shot.

    From who?

    IGN - 6.8/10 = http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/103/1034355p1.html
    OXM - 7.5/10 = http://www.oxmonline.com/article/reviews/xbox-360/m-r/magna-carta-ii

So far, it sounds like it has good gameplay marred by some annoyance with mediocre presentation values and a generic plot. I'll probably wait 'til it hits the bargain bin to pick it up.

Magna Carta: Tears of Blood wasn't anywhere near worst RPG ever made. It was too slow and repetitive and the opening song was laughable but it was nowhere near Secret of the Stars or Robotrek's level of awfulness since there were some good ideas in there. Heck, it was still better than Beyond the Beyond or Okage: Shadow King's level of mediocrity (although Okage is elevated partially by being one of the funniest games around).

It's a mediocre game brought even lower by some serious flaws, namely gameplay and the voicework. It had nice design and a fairly good plot, so if the sequel fixed the bad, it could be much better.

    Also, it had this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m60CE7o5ek

It almost doesn't deserve a track that good.

Evasion is auto. Based on stats not done manually.

You can move away from attacks too, but that is it as far as dodging goes.
