Desperately need help converting and condensing movie files

Alright, I have a JVC video camera and the program it is run by on my computer is 'Everio'.

I have no idea why, but all of the video files are '.MOD' extensions. Meaning they will only play through Everio. Also the files are huge!

How can I condense these movie files to something small enough to be uploaded onto youtube and into another format? Are there any free programs available that will do this for me. I have looked for them, possibly not hard enough, or maybe I don't know what I'm looking for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

You could use Windows Movie Maker to import the video into a normal format. I don't know too much about this particular thing, though.

The internet says they are just regular MPEG2. Rename the file to .mpg and you can condense it in Handbrake.

I ended up buying a program for 50bucks. I don't mind, it works well. I had tried everything else. Thanks for your help guys :-)

That's sad, since it probably uses FFMPEG, an open source/free backend to do all the work.
