Pre-forclosure/rent Scam?

I was looking at townhomes for rent on craigslist today and found a listing that I really liked. I emailed the seller and within 30 seconds (I assume an auto response) they responded with:

"Hi,

My home is actually behind on payments (in pre-foreclosure) and I have
it listed with www.preforeclosuresearcher.com. It is listing number
(Number) It is available for takeover, register with that site for all
information and if you're interested we can schedule a viewing."

When go to the site to register, I have to pay $2.95 to sign up. Is this really necessary? Maybe it isn't a scam, but I was amazed that I had to pay to view the property and that I got a response within seconds of me sending the email. Also, this was under the rent/lease section, wouldn't this actually be me making mortgage payments?

Does this all sound legit?

    Scam.

edit: Still a scam, but not even sure what scam they're running, other than getting $3 from people?

Unless it's some things to get you into leasing the place? Don't know, but doesn't matter - stay away.

It's a scam within a scam, possibly within another scam. Basically you offer to take over the house with a Sub2 and make any payments on their mortgage and pay any back payments and late payments.

You make up their payments, increase their credit rating, and then refinance the house while owning the deed. What commonly happens is you go through a site like this that "owns" the deed and then returns it to the original owner once you've paid up to your ass. What can happen is that the loan owner can call that the immediate amount of the loan be payed, by you. So if this person has a private loan from some person that's their friend you could get fucked almost 3 different ways.

In short, if it smells like shit it's probably a big pile of it.

I forgot to mention, I emailed the person because I couldn't find the given address on a map.

I then googled the given email address and it came up for the same type of listing but for Phoenix, CA, and somewhere else in the country.

Here's the listing, in case anyone's interested. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/apa/1138071462.html

    Ye Be Warned.

On top of it being a scam within a scam within a scam (possibily within another scam, I honestly lost count), you should be able to view properties for free on all legitmate real estate websites. Chances are that you'll find that a majority are listings on free sites.

Yeah I lost count after three too.

In one of their adds you can see a remax sign out front too.
