SotS does a few things which can throw a new player for a loop.
First: Humans are not a good starting race. They rely on lightning-fast expansion to build the strong industrial base that carries them through the endgame. Their drive system is fast, but has limitations which can be difficult to deal with at first. If you want an easier starting race, I recommend the Tarka.
Human ships cannot refuel while traveling down a node line. Better engines have better range on a single tank of gas, so you'll eventually be able to travel most nodelines. If you need to travel down a long nodeline right now then you should use ER ships. They have a longer base range.
Spiral is a difficult map to use, especially for humans, you want a more 3-d map for more node connections. I suggest disc if you have trouble with the maps to start with, but I prefer hourglass and torus.
You should never travel STL unless a planet has absolutely no node connections. It's almost never worth it.
UV lasers are good all-purpose weapons to research, but exploring the tech tree is a lot of fun.
