Whenever I'm listening to classical music, I'm always amazed. These composers created marvels to listen to.

What amazes me the most is how much they were able to produce in a lifetime. Mozart composed more than six hundred works, and he died at 35. That's insane! O_O

Bach was even more prolific than that, I think, even accounting for his longevity.

I don't even know if I'll have learn guitar or piano by that age.

And yes, Bach's work is just as impressive in terms of quantity. These guys were geniuses.

If that's the foundation for the argument then I'd kind of agree. Not much else in art can separate itself so completely from nature... (painting is visual and founded on nature by necessity. You can attempt to ignore it, but there is nearly always something recognizable about it based upon nature. But I also agree that it doesn't stand up to scrutiny, as you say.

If purest constitutes non imitation of nature. I take it that sound does not naturally occur in nature, music doesn't replicate anything from that? I don't think it goes any further than you can with visual art except that we are in general more visually attuned then musically.

Because from what I understand about art is that quite a few art movements have strayed pretty far from the natural world. The Supremetists, de stijl, cubism, etc.

Although I do agree about emotion, I think it's perhaps a more efficient vehicle for that than visual art, but unless art is equated with emotion I would disagree about its purity. Although it is certainly less tangible.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I'd rather play devil's advocate seeing as how everyone is jumping on board.

    Yeah, see it breaks down

I'm talking to a friend of mine about this right now on AIM, and he's saying that even if you discounted all of modernist/abstract artwork, there's still centuries of geometric art and architecture too. Many forms of dance are also non imitative of nature.

Though I still maintain that music in general is far off from nature in any obvious way. There's not many complex coherent rhythms, harmony, or counterpoint just floating around outside.

They may not be intended music but they sure can end up that way.

Yeah I do agree that music is somewhat more complex and abstracted from nature, but nature does have complex rhythms, and harmony, generally mathematically, although its obviously not auditory.

Actually if you really want to go into purity, I would suggest mathematics is probably pretty far up there, considering that visual art and music generally has a lot based in mathematics, geometry, wave structures, forms etc. less interesting if you don't know what it means but in terms of purity? Probably next or near to the top.

Is mathematics an art form though? Do you create mathmatical equations or do you discover/prove them?

I'm not sure mathematics is a form of art. certainly a driving principle behind just about all of it, but not an artform in and of itself.

I agree it's not art, but its a matter of your point of view also. I bet there are mathematicians that might argue otherwise.

I could also see an argument for literature and poetry since words as a purely human creation are quite far outside of the realm of nature.

Loom in his own strange way has a point. One, provided he/she had the correct surroundings, had more time available to devote to his/her art thereby genius could flourish more readily. Life is a much more complex fast paced beast these days, I mean exactly how much free time do we have these days. I have maybe 60 minutes of time to do as I wish each day and by that time I'm so knackered I can't think straight enough to do it.

Even just posting here is interlaced with 3 other concurrent things I'm doing.
