Cheque fraud?

Hey, so I wrote a cheque for $275 for a hockey league, it was pay to the order of "Golden horseshoe hockey league".

I lost the cheque (fallen out of wallet at some point) but did not notice it was lost until I looked at my bank account and it had already been cashed.

The hockey league never got my payment, and they have an account at TD bank.

My bank scans the cheques and I can see them online and the check was processed for an account at CIBC.

My bank says it might be someone who found the cheque that created an account at CIBC named "Golden horseshoe hockey league" just so they could cash the cheque.

So I doubt I can just go into CIBC and ask who made that account... I'm thinking of filing a report with the police for the fraud and maybe they would be able to inquire into who made the fake account?

I'm just pretty pissed I lost the cheque, that part is my fault, but people shouldnt be able to create new accounts and cash cheques that were written before the date they even had that account.

I'm looking for advice i guess... thanks!

Call the police, file a report, and then call your bank and see if they can reverse the check since it was fraudulently cashed. The faster the better on all of the aforementioned steps.

Call the bank, they may throw a hissyfit but they have to give the money back.
