I really really hate inexplicably getting worse for no apparent reason on certain nights. A couple nights ago I went 47-13 in championship mode and won a bunch of tournaments. Tonight, 29-21 and 0 grand prizes. And it's not like I'm facing vastly different character or player variety, either.

There are so many reasons this could be happening. Your reflexes and your decision making are enormously affected by your physical state.

Did you get enough sleep? Did you eat well? Did you drink coffee? Did you take any other kind of drugs that might produce drowsiness or pep you up? Were you stressed out from something else? Once you started losing, did you get frustrated? Were there other people in the room? Were there distracting objects in the edges of your vision? Did you have some food or grease or oil on your hands? etc etc.

Any one of these could make or break your performance. I, for example, am significantly better a big mug of coffee. It's very tempting to just chug a mug every time I sit down and play.

I've lost many first rounds attempting to hold a cigarette in my left hand while working the controller. I have noticed that SFIV greatly increases my desire for a "smoke break".

    Smoking really is lame.

After some matches, you just gotta have a cig.

It's official, people on the PS3 championship circuit just do not know wtf to do against Guile. There is no reason why I should be getting to the finals with him consistently while taking down people with three times as much GP. Not because the character is bad, I am simply just not that good with him. I think it has to do with the fact that I just run at people with Guile instead of turtling, and the confusion lasts for 2 rounds. It is so delicious to train an opponent to FA on his double cr.HK and then throwing out a cr.MK instead and dashing in for a throw while they're in FA animation. :P

Surprisingly there aren't that many Guiles online, and I think a lot of people have trouble adapting. Especially an offensive Guile, that's just crazy.

The problem with tutorial videos is it makes you want to branch out to other characters. Dammit, I'm still trying to learn Abel.

I don't think branching out to other characters is all that bad. Every time I've tried another character, my game gets a little better. I started with Fei Long. I found a wall with him pretty quickly that I couldn't pass so I tried out Akuma. Akuma taught me alot about Ultras and running away. But I learned a bad habit with Akuma: jumping like a freaking idiot most the time. After a while with Akuma his hp bothered me and I was getting bored so I moved to Gen. Gen took a while to figure out, and I learned crossups with him. But I kept the bad habit I learned with Akuma and I jump around with Gen using his Ogas all the time. I get punished quite alot because of Ogas. After utterly thorough asswhuppings with the sudden Chun-Li popularity in G2, and my deer-in-the-headlights tournament matches with Sabre, I've started using Ryu in Championship mode. Ryu is teaching me alot about spacing and is helping me learn to hit confirm. I don't really enjoy playing as Ryu because that means I'm just one out of a million Ryu's that are out there, but it's helping to teach me so I'm going with it.

TL;DR version: Everytime I pick up another character there's another part of the game that I start to understand. Except for Gief. The only thing I learn with him is that 360 motions and their shortcut counterparts were not made for my frencherican hands.

Fantastic points, thanks for giving me another way to look at it. Guile and Blanka interest me so maybe I'll try them, and maybe Ryu so I can reacquaint myself with the mechanics.
